Refund my $2.99

Used this at Vail for a group of us to help us locate individual members of the group while skiing in case we became separated. After setting it up correctly which was fairly straightforward, we put it to the test against Strava. Unfortunately, it was completely off in the number of runs, distance and verticals. We all skied together but each of us got significantly different values. Strava seemed much more accurate. And most importantly, it did not work well helping us locate different members of the group. For example, while the seven of us were eating lunch together, one person was still geo located on a ski trail until about 45 minutes into the meal. Hard to recommend this app.

Good app

Needs to be updated for 2023

Resolution

Colors wash in sunlight and types of eyewear.
Contrast needs improving.

Have to give access to contacts

That is such a bummer that you must give access to your contacts to use the app. You don’t get to skip that option.

Limited resorts

Beware before buying it works at your ski resort(s). Useless for my midwest area.

Kludgy

Didn’t record days of skiing. Not enough inputs.

Major resort Alta not on their system.

Not sure how it works. Can’t interrogate the app.

Flakey

Have skied 2 days as a member of a group but the app fails to record any statistics for my skiing. 0 runs, 0 miles. Disappointed.

Didn’t work at Brighton

App did not locate Brighton Ski resort Itah when I was there. Kept sending me to Alta, a nearby resort. Disappointed but move to another app.

Missing Many Resorts

Not clear that many resorts are not available. Disappointed.

Does what it says really well

SkyLinx is primarily about one thing. Automatically mapping lifts and runs, and sharing them with your friends or family in real time.

It’s essentially “Find My Friends at a ski resort” and as a bonus, it will keep track of which lifts and tracks you rode each day and for each ski season, as well as total distance.

I frequent Lake Tahoe (e.g., Squaw, Northstar, Heavenly) and the app is incredibly accurate. It obviously needs data connection to indicate where your friends are, but it logs my own data just fine with weak or no signal.

This app does not track your ski performance. No average and maximum speed, altitude, slope degree, duration, and difficulty level. No HealthKit integration. I would gladly buy an IAP to enable performance monitoring if available.

On-board messaging feature works fine, and it has useful set of quick replies. But I much prefer to use Apple’s Messages app.

The app has a polished overall look and feel, but dated. It depends on hamburger menu for navigation. I would much prefer navigation tool bar on the bottom.

I wish the app would let me create a permanent family group. Instead, I have to send a text message each day to kick start the ski run.

The app does not backup data at all. So if you setup your phone as new, you will lose all past data.

Apple Watch app is also quite nice. It uses very little resource and performs okay even on series 0 Apple Watch.

The battery impact is surprisingly low. Even with heavy video and photo shooting, and allowing my kids to play games during the lunch break, my iPhone 7 Plus ended 9-hour day with 50% battery life to spare.

Does it all!

Great to be able to see my location on the mountain along with others in my group. Very easy to locate my position on the trail map to make navigation easy. Zero learning curve. Intuitive.

Like that I can see the group in real time

Map resolution is poor, cannot make out the writing on many runs and zooming in doesn’t help. So if you don’t know the area well you can’t tell the names is some of the runs

I’m home for the day and can see each lift and run for everyone

Not enough ski areas on this app

I was really excited about this for our group to be able to check and locate each other on the ski slopes. I bought it but didn’t realize it doesn’t even include the ski area we go to. We go to Winter Park Colorado and it’s not included in the list of mappable locations. Maybe in a couple of years this app will be good -right now it is worthless to me.

Worked well for our group

App did an admirable job of locating our group of six during a three day trip at Park City. GPS was off a few times but the tracking down lifts and runs was pretty solid and kept a record of the day. Combined with group text it made it easy to meet up. For the fee it would be nice if it tracked speed or other movements as well as runs and distance.

Great by yourself or with friends - now with Rockies!

Update
————
And now Canada and the North East! People who are complaining obviously didn't read the description. The supported resorts are listed and this isn't a hardcore stats app. This is about skiing with your friends or tracking your runs by name (no other app does this!)

Anyone who has done any skiing or snowboarding knows how hard it is to find people on the slopes. Plus just getting lost wondering which run you are on. The app does a great job of showing you exactly where you are on the map, as well as making it easy to coordinate with your friends. Perfect!

No way to review it

I have no way to review the app because I'm at a mountain that it doesn't support, Crested Butte. Waste of my money and time!

Very disappointed considering the price

It doesn't even record your speed. There are much better (and free) alternatives, e.g. Trace Snow, resort apps (Epic, Squaw Valley). The only useful feature is group realtime location and messaging. But you can easily achieve that by using whatever IM app + Find My Friends.

Definitely not worth it.

Useless if you're at an unsupported mountain

It only works if you're at one of the mountains in its list. There's no "other" mode.

Disappointed

I purchased this app based on a few different comparisons I read of ski apps online, and some positive reviews, I think they were all sucked in by the "social" aspect, and being able to text from the app(big whoop), 'cause I was unimpressed.

There were a few issues that caused me to be disappointed, after my first use.

1. My phone battery died halfway through my ski day, (Old phone, gps, and streaming music. Kills the battery pretty fast, and I forgot re-charge battery.) and even though I had the companion Apple Watch app installed I only got half a day's worth of stats. Seems like if the watch app is running and the watch has GPS, it should still be able to record stats and sync up w/ the phone once it is recharged.

2. Even after recharging my phone, and shutting down the app on the iPhone, it was still using my GPS, despite the fact that I set it to "When using the app" in location preferences, and no longer had the app in the foreground on the watch. I had to reboot my phone to get it to stop using the GPS.

3. Maybe it's buried in the preferences screens somewhere, but I couldn't a way to get to many of the stats available in other ski-tracking apps like top speed, total vert., etc. All I got were runs, miles, and lifts.

I think I'll go back to using ski-tracks.

Finally a ski slope tracker that got it right

I have tried severa "track friends on the slopes" apps and most of them fall short. This one did a great job in the following areas (which were my key care abouts) (1) realtime updates of where your "party" is skiing. Clearn notes of not only what lift and run they are on but realtime updates of where they are on the lift or "run". For a lift it shows 0% when in line or just getting on. Then quick progressions as they ride up the chair with 10% increments. Then at the top of the run, it notes 0% when at the top and again progresses in 10% increments until at the bottom of the run which notes 100%. It was so reliable, that I could tell when the chair stopped and restarted. (2) Very power efficient. I was concerned that it would drain my battery and it did not! It also had cool messaging capabilities which I did not try but looks interesting. The only "shortcomming" is that it has a limited number of slopes, but I'm sure that will increase with time. Fantastic technology and glad to have finally have found an app that works in this space!!
