SkinScan — Digital Wound Imaging for Clinical Research SkinScan is a closed research application developed in collaboration with the University of Saskatchewan and Virtual Health Hub. It is designed exclusively for authorized healthcare providers participating in an approved feasibility study on standardized digital wound imaging and tele-wound care. This app is not available for public registration. Access is restricted to enrolled healthcare providers participating in the research study. Study Purpose Chronic wounds — including diabetic ulcers, pressure injuries, and surgical wounds — affect millions of patients and require consistent documentation for effective treatment. SkinScan evaluates whether standardized smartphone-based wound photography can produce accurate, consistent, and reproducible images suitable for clinical assessment, remote wound care, and improved patient outcomes. Features Guided Camera Capture: Real-time camera overlay provides visual feedback on alignment, distance, and lighting to ensure consistent, high-quality wound photographs. AprilTag Calibration: Uses AprilTag fiducial markers placed alongside the wound for precise scale reference, converting pixel data into real-world millimetre measurements. AI-Powered Wound Analysis: Images are processed through a cloud-based AI pipeline with real-time progress streaming. Analysis includes wound boundary segmentation, wound type classification, tissue assessment, and dimensional measurements. AI-Generated Clinical Insights: Based on wound analysis, the app generates clinical recommendations including suggested care approaches and treatment considerations, provided for research evaluation purposes only. Secure Cloud Storage: All wound images captured by users — nurses or healthcare providers who create patient profiles, document wound cases, and follow up on treatment with wound-care specialist — are stored securely in the cloud in Canada. No images are saved on the device. Wound Case Management: Create detailed wound cases with multiple photographs, track wound location using an interactive body map, document injury mechanism, wound staging, tissue type, and drainage assessment. Patient Records: Search, select, and manage patient profiles, associate wound cases with individual patients, and track multiple wounds across visits. Push Notifications: Receive real-time notifications for treatment plans assigned by physicians through the companion doctor portal — a web-based platform used for user management and overseeing wound treatment progress captured through the app. Provider Feedback Surveys: Built-in survey and interview tools collect provider feedback on usability, clinical workflow integration, and perceived value of digital wound imaging. Dashboard: Central overview of recent patients, active cases, and quick-action tiles for efficient clinical workflow. Research Ethics Approval This study has received ethical approval from the University of Saskatchewan Biomedical Research Ethics Board (Bio-REB), Application ID: 6060. Approved December 14, 2025, valid through December 14, 2026. Classified as minimal risk with delegated review. Informed Consent Participation is entirely voluntary. Both patients and healthcare providers receive detailed consent forms prior to enrolment covering the nature, purpose, and duration of the study; procedures involved; potential risks and benefits; how data is collected, de-identified, stored, and protected; confidentiality measures; the right to withdraw at any time without consequence; and contact information for the research team and the University of Saskatchewan Research Ethics Office.
