SkyCharts XC EFB User Reviews

Keep looking for an app that works.

This app is simply not working. I've tried on more than one occasion, over a fast WiFi connection, to get charts downloaded but it's just not happening.

I had high hopes, but this app let me down.

Response from developer

Please email support@skycharts.net and we'll sort it out

Horrible

Cannot be trusted period it just doesn’t work. I’ve been trying to download a chart in Miami for 2 days!!!

Blurry

Charts are horribly pixilated when zoomed in even when fully downloaded. If this is a mistake please advise how to fix this.

Download?

Even after subscribing the maps don’t seem to download.

Response from developer

No need to subscribe during the 30 day trial period, no hidden features are unlocked by the purchase. Seems like there is some other problem, please contact support@skycharts.net and we will figure it out.

Original Skycharts Pro Purchasers Getting Ripped Off

Skycharts Pro owners were promised regular updates free of charge, now it’s a paid subscription.

Do not support this shady business, their business practices have shafted those that supported them in their infancy.

Response from developer

Hi avguserguy. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but the Pro version always clearly stated it included updates for a year, then it would start charging you for updates. The Pro version was removed from sale in December 2016 when the XC version was released. We are always interested in your feedback, please let us know at support@skycharts.net

Scanned not vectors

Appears to be scanned charts; when you zoom in the charts get 'jaggy'.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. The charts are generated from the raster charts FAA provide. However, FAA does not provide any vector maps yet. For zooming on raster charts there is always a tradeoff between size and maximum zoom. But every increase in zoom level makes the downloads 4 times larger! Hence the app allows for 'over-zoom' since that sometimes helps readability, but if the charts start becoming blurry you have reached the maximum zoom level. For any questions please don't hesitate to email support@skycharts.net

I've always loved the SkyCharts apps

This app is absolutely one of my favorites, and inexpensive--been using it for years! Now there is the XC version with geo-cached overlay approach charts. It's very easy to use. Double tap near an airport on the chart, and the information appears, including airport facility directories and approaches. It's very easy switch between sectionals, WAC charts, and IFR charts, to name a few. Regions can be downloaded for caching- no need for cellular or wifi. Mostly, it's uncomplicated unlike most of the super sophisticated, and expensive apps out there. I don't need to be fumbling around in the cockpit struggling with an app, if you know what I mean. There is no need to subscribe for the whole year, and can be set up to automatically pay on a monthly basis, or manually per chart cycle.

Can't please everyone

I liked the old version for its simplicity. It was a good backup for FlyQ.

Great app and easy to use!

I purchased this app, but still had ads. I contacted them & they fixed it right away. Awesome, quick customer service & easiest flight app to use of the ones I've tried!

Owner

Wasn't thrilled by this update at first. I talked to the owner and he help me through it,it is having a little trouble but they're fixing it now if you send him an email he will walk you through it. The original one was much better this one has a few issues but they're working through them for example if you have the map in one location and it jumps to another location if you put a route and it will stay on the location that you have it set at. The clarity is getting better when you zoom in. So they're working on that. All in all I think it's one of the better options out there. He's trying to fix any issues it might have and he is very diligent at getting back to you in a timely manner so if you give it a chance I think you can get this to work for you.
And yes it does have some downloaded issues but just plug in your phone or iPad let it download overnight it should be fine by morning. Just don't unplug it and make sure that it's plugged in and set it and forget it. It's a very big app and has lots and lots of charts especially the plates so just give The entire night to download and it should be finished by morning for sure. I'm not sure if he fix that one yet I think you may have. But remember it's thousands of charts so it's not unheard of that I could take many hours.
All in all I would recommend this app it does serve the purpose at hand and that is putting in a route and being able to follow it while you're flying. It is worth the $3.99 fee.

I wish I could rate higher

I've done my best to support this developer. I'm a flight instructor who has suggested this app to my students for years. I'm not sure why he decided to completely change the app, but it is absolutely for the worst. It is about as un-user friendly as you could possibly get.

I have flown with the old app all over the country and way down to the south tip of the Bahamas. It used to be that if I needed an approach plate or airport diagram, I could bring up the airport and click on what I needed. It downloaded it right there in seconds. Unfortunately, the old version no longer exists.

I paid $4-$5 for this new app, so my wife and I could take a trip. Nothing on it worked. We couldn't bring up a plate without downloading several states. After several attempts and an hour per attempt, they never did finish downloading. We had to make the trip without a working app. Several dollars well spent.

Also, the auto renew on the subscription made me mad. I'm all for the guy making money, but this is ridiculous. I had to google the way to turn off the auto-renew, and it wasn't easy. Of course, Apple makes it as complicated as possible.

Response from developer

Thank you for your support! The caching policy has changed somewhat; in previous versions, you could pick and choose individual A/FD and approach plates. In the XC version you can download a larger region instead. This is a request from customers, who have realized they needed more charts while flying than they originally thought. Downloading all plates for a region is a decent amount data. Please see Q37 in the FAQ how to calculate how long it should take. http://skycharts.net/faq.html Please email support@skycharts.net for any questions or comments.

Fantastic!

Love the geo-referenced plates directly on the map! Flight sim support makes it easy to practice approaches! And support is great, got an answer right away!

BBQ Pilot

What's up with the banner ads on the paid version recently? No good. Takes forever to load now.

Response from developer

Thank you for your purchase! Ads are now only shown when the trial or paid period has expired. For download questions, please see Q37 in the FAQ here: http://skycharts.net/faq.html Please don't hesitate to email support@skycharts.net if you have any questions.

Previous version was much better

The most important thing about a chart is to actually be able to read it. The previous version of this app had excellent chart clarity. But not the XC version. It's all blurry when you zoom in to read things like frequencies and obstacle elevations. Total waste of time.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. There were some issues with the chart generation that have been resolved. Please email support@skycharts.net if you have any other questions or concerns.

How did it get worse?

This is the updated version from the old SkyCharts pro. It's clunkier, slower, doesn't interface with sims, why is my current location always used to start route planning? It's just obnoxious. They ruined a good, simple thing. This new version adds nothing on the old one, just a bad interface. The sim thing was nice to have, but not a big deal, but for it to not even load charts sometimes when I open it up, that's an issue. It basically has one job!

Will not work !

SkyCharts Pro worked with no problems but this XC version has many faults on my iPhone 6S .
1. After downloading XC I picked the north east download with plates , after a long time it finished loading and every time it starts it goes to the west coast and the only way to get to the east coast is to drag across the entire US to the north east . Now every time you go into the data to change layers Ect it goes back to the west coast and it starts again and no matter what you have selected in the prior move it always ends up on the VFR map and you have to try and start again with no chance of changing it . There is no way I can find to set the starting airport in Massachusetts like I want !
It has failed to work with my Elite Simulator software period !
Now I have deleted the app 3 times and again down loaded the North East with the same results. I would like to subscribe but will not if it doesn't work with my Elite or iPhone 6S software

Downloading charts is impossible

Good luck trying to download charts. My phone to s burning up and and my battery is dying while download progress is not getting anywhere. Been trying for hours. I would NOT recommend this app.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. In order to provide the clarity and detail that pilots require, the chart files need to be large. We are working on ways to reduce the amount of data needed. Please see Q37 in the FAQ how to figure out how long they should take: http://skycharts.net/faq.html . If you have any additional questions, comments, or feedback, please email support@skycharts.net

Greatly improved!

The new update resolved a lot of the bugs and issues of the previous version. I use this as a drone pilot and it is very helpful. I am able to update charts and subscribe successfully in the new version.

Frequent crashes

App crashes about every 5 minutes on iPhone 7 10.1.1. Thank you so much for what was a fantastic app for years (pro). New app essentially useless in flight due to unreliability. Even the download process does not work properly; if one pack fails, no button to retry download.

Too bad you stopped supporting the good app. It is time to move on to something else.
