Great App

Love it.

Better obstacle avoidance than DJI Mavic 2

The R1 is fun to fly. I have confidence it’s not going to run into anything during flight. I have the Mavic 2 Zoom which is also an amazing machine, but it’s obstacle avoidance relies on “I’M STOPPING SO I DON’T FLY INTO IT” technology whereas the Skydio R1 has, “I’ll figure out a safe way around it” technology. It’s beautiful to see this at work. Recently I was trying to get a shot of an abandoned power plant building. I was flying up toward three smokestacks. Because the Mavic 2 wasn’t tracking anything I wasn’t able to engage its “Advanced Pilot Assistance System” that mimics the features of the R1’s obstacle avoidance. As the Mavic 2 ascended close to the smokestacks, getting beautiful video, it abruptly stopped. “Getting too close, must stop”. About the only way to avoid this behavior is to turn off obstacle avoidance and fly manually. But that makes flying riskier and requires additional skills. Close in, the R1 simply, elegantly figures out an alternative to stopping and continues. In this scenario R1 wins the day. The Mavic 2 wins in other scenarios that the R1 can’t even dream about so I’m glad I have both drones. I look forward to learning the new skills Skydio just released on 9/5/18 such as cable shots. Is the R1 foolproof? No. I’ve crashed the R1 on a couple of occasions, shearing off the propellers and chipping the “wing”. Thankfully, Skydio sent replacement parts and analyzed my videos to see what happened. Hopefully, each iteration of the software makes the drone even smarter about such things as I haven’t had any crashes since then.
