What's New in SkySafari 8 Plus

8.1.2

November 4, 2026

This update restores Astro Weather forecasts, improves search and the sky catalogs, and fixes several other issues reported since 8.1.1. BUG FIXES - Fixed Astro Weather forecasts failing to load. When the forecast couldn't be retrieved, SkySafari also kept retrying without pause; it now tries again only when you return to the forecast. - Fixed comet brightness for comets updated from the Minor Planet Center. These were predicted too bright when far from the Sun and too faint when close to it. - Fixed AirDrop no longer working after sharing an image from the Image Gallery until SkySafari was relaunched. - Fixed thousands of variable stars with no catalogued type being described as "eruptive" variables. - Abell planetary nebulae are labeled "Abell" again instead of being listed as galaxy clusters ("ACO"). - Fixed the Iris Nebula (NGC 7023) appearing twice, and the Triangulum and Cigar Galaxies showing their names twice. IMPROVEMENTS - Search now recognizes Bayer designations typed with Greek letters, such as "γ Cas" or "α² CVn", and SIMBAD-style abbreviations such as "alf CMa". - Find moons by provisional designation or Roman numeral, such as "Uranus XXVIII". Added Uranus's newly discovered moon S/2025 U 1. - Restored 27 faint dwarf galaxies of the Local Group, such as Segue 1, Boötes I, and Crater II, missing since SkySafari 7. - Added "Methuselah" as a common name for the ancient star HD 140283, and corrected its spectral type and variability. - Updated for iOS 27. Thank you for using SkySafari. Clear skies!

More interface work less new features please

First of all I have to say I like and use the app a lot, however there are still things that annoy me from V7 and the new features feel somewhat unneeded for me at least.

Want to use the compass orientation to position yourself after setting the time for later in the evening. Tough. It’ll reset the time.

Want to tap that nebula? Good luck, you’ll probably get a star - even if you thought the border or its name might work.

My gripes:

Adding images is nice… but they somewhat clash with the rest of the sky afterwards, it is nice seeing them in the orientation you took them though.

Delete that image from SkySafari’s view? It’ll also delete it from the iOS gallery with no warning - why?? Thankfully iCloud keeps your photos backed up.

Plate-solving, a little hit and miss with cropped images for me so far. Want to download MORE files to help - hope you have space. Fail to plate solve locally so try online? Oh, that’ll be a subscription after you’ve hit the button to try.

The calendar is still full of HTML tags in the descriptions. <p><span>Saturn anyone?

Often I’ll click an event and the button doesn’t even do anything. Then once viewing you can’t orientate yourself or even set a flag/save the target so you can see where in your view this would occur relative to you at the given time.

What’s happened to the images in the object descriptions? What used to be representations or even photos are now just colour backgrounds from whatever theme you picked.

I think I’d have rather have improved features more than new features and additional subscription points. Hopefully things will be made better as more updates roll out.
