PROMPTER

The new setting is very frustrating. Glitches all the time occure when arunning various Reader setting, unlike the previous version when run the prompter with speed adjustment the READER does not work😔😔😔

Response from developer

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry the Reader has been giving you trouble since the update. I want to get this in front of my developers so we can figure out what's going on. Please contact support@slatable.com and we'll get it sorted from there. David CEO Slatable Inc.

Fixed!

It looks like they fixed the issues! Thank you for maintaining the great features that you currently have, and not taking away from them while you do updates! Five stars, you truly do not need any other apps for auditions.

Garbled audio and wasted time

I want to like this. I want to use it - without it turning into hours of wasted time and frustration. But every time I use it, at least one if not more scenes that I have recorded audio for (either imported or within the app) end up sounding like they were recorded in a wind tunnel. Thy sound is fine when played in the scene- so you move on thinking ā€œThat was the one!ā€. Until you play it back and it’s totally unusable. Self taping with no reader is bad enough. Spending an hour or more and then finding out it was a total waste of time, energy and money is infuriating. Also? The screen image needs to accurately reflect the framing that will be recorded. It doesn’t matter if you’re using the front or back camera, the image you see will NOT be the frame that is recorded. So plan to spend 15 minutes shimmying your tripod around and doing test recordings because you also can’t crop or zoom to correct. Good times!

Response from developer

Thanks for reaching out. I'm really sorry about the frustration with the garbled audio. There's nothing worse than nailing a take only to discover it's unusable on playback. That's genuinely awful, especially when you're already working without a reader. We just released an update that fixes a bug causing audio issues on certain devices. If you're still experiencing problems after updating, lowering the volume or using a Bluetooth speaker can help. On the camera framing issue, you're right, and we've been working on improvements there. I'd love to have you test the update before we launch it if you're interested. Just reach out at support@slatable.com and I'll get you set up. Best David CEO Slatable Inc.

The bugs are so terrible

Please fix the bugs. The black screen bug and muted audio playing while recording an insanely frustrating and make it IMPOSSIBLE to film. Haven’t seen a legitimate update to this app in so long. Feels like an AI cash grab app half the time.
I might just go make my own.

Immense Potential but quite a few issues

This app is by far the best in contrast to its competition, but it’s far from perfect.

1. I should be able to film with the camera on either the left or the right side, currently it’s only the left side.

2. All too often either audio doesn’t convert or muted audio is not actually muted when recording.
3. Several times when recording the App will crash and not record at all.

4. I wish there was a way where you could have multiple voices in the same audition rather than just one.

Teleprompter

Please please please make the teleprompter more intuitive. It’s honestly such a terribly fleshed out tool and it’s very important.

Trying to change the speed is so miserable. The slider is a disaster. Not only is it impossible to tell what speed you’re changing it to, but it resets every time you open and close your prompter or do a different take.

Simplest fix would be a +- button.

It’s very difficult to balance the speed with recorded audio and sync up your spoken lines because of this.

Aside from that, another star off because recording and voice mods are so buggy. It’s been in ā€œbetaā€ for over a year and still not one update to it.

I’ve honestly started using chatgpt to be my reader because the time I spend trying to get your app, that I pay full price, to work. cost about the same price tbh.

Response from developer

Thank you for taking the time to write this detailed feedback on the teleprompter. I completely understand your frustration with the speed controls. Your suggestion for +/- buttons makes perfect sense for more precise and consistent control. Please reach out to us at support@slatable.com about the specific issues you're experiencing. I'd love to help get those resolved for you. Best, David CEO, Slatable Inc.

Adjusted After Customer Service

*** Edit: After reaching out to their customer support, the CEO contacted me and resolved the issues. He was very helpful, kind, and understanding.

Original post: The voice changer (almost) NEVER WORKS. It feels like I’ve spent hours and hours trying to convert the audio to one of the female voices to read the other lines (of a female character) and it either uses a male voice or it just emits loud clanging noises. It is a disaster.

Just what I need

This app has alleviated so much of my stress around self tapes! My reps are always saying to be quick and get them in immediately but with a day job and a life - it’s so hard to do let alone when you need to find a reader also. The voice converter actually sounds like a real person! The teleprompter and ability to do everything in one app is game changing. I hit a bug and sent in a ticket and got a response very quickly. It’s clear that David cares about his product and helping people. I also love that I can just save it to my phone and send from my computer (I like to watch it on my computer before sending in since the monitor is bigger). I was also worried the app would be controlling about sending it for me or making the file a weird type but it gives you a lot of freedom. Love this so much!

Update: ok, I’ve used it for like 15 auditions now and it’s still great but I struggle when the sides are many pages long and dialogue heavy. I like to keep it as a pdf to preserve the formatting (easier to read) but the timing of the teleprompter and the reader voices can be a challenge sometimes. I wish there was a way to keep the PDF but have it remove the page breaks. Waiting for it to scroll to the next page kills the whole take. Or if it could let me edit the teleprompter text in the middle of a take then I wouldn’t mind using the import feature. Then I could remove some of the dialogue and action lines to match the pacing I need. I would also love if the voices could play back when we are done talking (like the cold read memorization app does) clicking the remote can be heard in my self tape and I have to remove the sounds myself. I don’t use the new AI voice because it takes much longer to record and doesn’t seem any better (yet).

No option to try before buying

All I wanted to do was try the teleprompter for a minute before purchasing. Nope. Ok then.

Lacking to be truly useful

Voice changer is faulty and inconsistent. The beta is pretty much useless and doesn’t time well to cue your lines as a reader.

I could get over all of this but the one thing that rendered this app useless: You can’t mirror your screen or use an HDMI into a monitor while the app is in use! It completely deactivates the app until you stop screen mirroring!

What is the point of a teleprompter to help you self tape by yourself if you can’t even mirror your screen to another monitor? Seriously this is a HUGE mistake. It would make the app incredibly useful if that were allowed.

Response from developer

Hi Kaynerama, Thanks for the feedback. Based on suggestions like yours, we just released version 3.5, which now supports screen mirroring to a Mac or Apple TV. If you’re open to sharing more about your experience with the voice changer, I’d love to hear it. Just reach out via support. I’d also love to learn more about your experience with the reader. Timing can vary depending on how it’s used, so any details you’re willing to share would help us improve it. For more consistent control, we recommend using a small Bluetooth media remote to cue lines. I appreciate you giving the app a try and hope the update makes it more useful for you. Best, David CEO

Could be a great App

This App could really be great if the developers took the time to work out a few bugs and correct a couple things.

1) the teleprompter does not support a speed slow enough for any standard script or pace. The ā€œteleprompterā€ app I have is basically paused when it’s at its lowest speed. It also uses numbers instead of a dial and you can increase or decrease by 1 number at a time which is helpful in getting to exactly the speed you need.

2) I can’t seem to save individual takes. I can’t even seem to be able to save the whole audition. The share button that is available at the audition setting screen is always disabled. I have to go to settings and choose export all audition files to save anything. Being able to save individual takes would be amazing.

3) There is a bug in the audio converter in both the beta and classic versions where I will convert all lines to a different voice, but some lines will be converted to a completely different voice. So, it sounds like I am speaking to multiple people when I should only be speaking to one. I have tried to correct this multiple ways without deleting the audio, but the only thing that works is deleting the audio and recording again, but even sometimes that will not work. I have had to resort to using the unconverted audio, which is irritating because the voice-changing capabilities is why I chose this app.

4) There is another bug where I will add a new scene to the same audition, record audio, and convert the audio. Then, when I go to do a take, I select the audio button and an error message pops up saying I have no audio and must record it. But, if I leave the take and go back to where I record the audio, the audio is there. Again, I have tried to fix this multiple ways but the only thing that worked was deleting the second scene and starting a whole other audition for that scene.

This app in theory is amazing. But I had three auditions to do yesterday that took me four hours to get on tape when they really could have taken me one, all because of these issues. I have every intention of sticking with it in hopes that it will just keep improving. I am thankful that someone out there has recognized the unique need for this app. Please don’t give up on it šŸ™

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and detailing your experience with the app. I really appreciate your honest feedback—it’s invaluable for helping us improve. I did receive your support email and replied a couple of times, so I hope you’ll have a chance to check those out. Please feel free to reply there if you’d like to continue troubleshooting! I’d like to understand your teleprompter experience a bit better. Can you share what speed you’re running at and whether you’re using a scanned script or text? It sounds like the current slowest speed might not be meeting your needs. As a premium subscriber, you can save individual takes by tapping the More menu (•••) on the Takes screen in the top right, then ā€œSelect,ā€ choosing the takes you want, and finally tapping the save icon at the bottom right. We even name them and add S1T1, etc.! If this isn’t working as expected, please let me know so we can look into it. And you just need to tap on the "like" heart icon top right in the Take icon to add your Takes to create an audition. Please let me know if this is not happening. Regarding the audio converter issue, generative AI sometimes produces results that aren’t 100% consistent. We made a tweak in a recent update to improve stability. Thanks again for your detailed feedback and for sticking with us. Feel free to reach out anytime with more questions or suggestions. In the Settings screen there are buttons for our support pages and to create a support ticket—I do try to respond as quickly as possible since I know auditions are often time-sensitive. Reviews too high

I don’t know why this app has such a high rating. I paid for premium. You shouldn’t. I’m canceling. This app has so much potential, but has made things harder so far. I REALLY liked the idea of the AI voice changer because I’m fairly remote and often can’t get a reader; however, the scene audio option will delete lines if you try to go back and edit (or say you have no scene audio), and the ā€œreaderā€ lines are much louder than my lines in the recording.

I select a tail slate, upload a slate, and it’s not included in the recording for some reason.

Also, the frame you see while filming is NOT the frame that ends up shown in the recording. Pretty important.

The app should have a full editing tool at premium price. I still have to export the files to editing software to formulate a proper audition, even though the takes and slate are recorded in the app.

I recommend Audition Pro (free) over this app, to be honest. Especially when you need another character. The audio CRACKS loudly before your reader’s lines, but it’s free, and you can edit out that initial crackle if you edit/time correctly.

I feel like this app really focuses on the title cards/info and doesn’t have enough knowledge of and attention to the details of what’s actually needed for an audition.

Hi there, Thank you for your honest review and for taking the time to share your experience. I’m sorry to hear about the issues you encountered. Could you please email us at support@slatable.com with more details? Specifically, we’d like to know if you’re using the new beta version of SceneAudio or the classic one, and whether you have the tail slate selected and toggled on. Also, any additional details about the volume settings on your device would be helpful. We truly value your feedback as it helps us improve the app for all users. Best, David

Everything locked behind a paywall

Good idea for an app but very greedy of the company. Huge waste of time and good takes wasted

We truly appreciate your input—if you have specific suggestions or would like help making the most of the free plan, please reach out to our support team. Thank you again for trying Slatable.

Can't try before you buy

There was no option to try it out first before purchasing. How am I to know if this app is worth the money without atleast having a demo to test it out. Not going to pay the amount of money you're wanting if I have no idea if it's fit for purpose.

Response from developer

I hear you! It’s completely fair to want to try an app before committing. That’s why we offer a free plan, which lets you record one audition per month—so you can see if it’s a good fit before upgrading. If you need more than that, the Basic plan gives you 3 auditions per month, and Premium unlocks unlimited recordings, plus the AI voice and teleprompter features. Let us know if you have any questions at support@slatable.com we're happy to help!

Not What You Want/Need

This app is great in theory, but the application of it’s practicality is a miss.

The audio of the other reader playing while recording a video muffles the video and distorts the sound. The built in AI voices pick up the hum or buzz in a room and translates it to random words and louder noises. But even if you get a smooth audio recording once again, it won’t work on the self tape because of how the audio is playing from the device that is also recording. I spent hours trying to get this to work and wasted great takes because of this.

The AI voices only come with four options, there’s no text to speech option so you have to speak the script first how you want it and the convert it to AI, and there’s no way to download the AI audio after either.

The video trimming is hard to use, and has auto snap so it doesn’t let you edit precisely.

This app is a glorified Voice Memo, you still have to time out your piece to the second for it to make sense.

Also the teleprompter does not scroll over the video being recorded like a teleprompter would in the field. The Teleprompter feature is just a slow scroll on a document you have to copy and paste, or uploaded PDF. You can’t record yourself at the same time, so what’s the point unless you hold your phone or iPad with you?

Another thing, I can’t log in again on a separate device. It only wants me on one device, so I can’t even have the audio play from my iPad because there is no login screen. Just a sign up screen, which is a user pain point and a UX nightmare.

I wouldn’t have written this review if this was free app, but now I’m out $10. I had this app for 5 hours total and have already cancelled the subscription, and had two mental breakdowns because of it.

All in all I did my self tape without this app entirely at the end. Caused more headaches than it solved.

Hi, So sorry you had issues with the app. We have a new version on the AppStore which fixes a bug related to the muffled sound. Unfortunately reviews sometimes take a while to post so a support ticket might have helped with this. I’m happy to answer your review here: We actually have 16 AI voices to choose from. If you scroll down the popup list you can see all of them, play a small audio clip to hear what they sound like, and then choose from the list. I'd love to know what you're experiencing with the trimmer. We've not included auto-snap so you should have fine-grained control over where you trim. There is a teleprompter in the camera. Just tap on the Scroll icon and it will overlay the camera and then tap on Record as you usually would. The other Teleprompter is for rehearsing your lines or using with a teleprompter beam splitter. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the UI. I'll definitely make a note of that for future versions. You should be able to log into your account on multiple devices. Slatable is not cloud based, for security reasons, so you'd need to set up each device separately. If you could send me a screen shot of what you're seeing to support@slatable.com I'd love to know as obviously that's not great if you can't log in. I appreciate your feedback. I do wish you had contacted us at support as we're always happy to help and figure out workarounds if something is not working as it should. best David CEO Slatable.

Good idea - POOR EXECUTION

good idea but this app simply made me lost a lot of content just simply because i recorded self tapes and for whatever reason they show as invalid and I can’t play them anymore. The audio is also extremely poor

So Many Bugs

I really want to like this app, especially with the new AI features. But the AI voices are inconsistent, and there’s a limit on the amount of takes you can have regarding the AI voices (even with the premium plan).

Good idea, terrible quality

Everything works well until you play back and sound is terrible. Comes and goes. Terrible waste of time and money

I must have her self-taped auditions

Slatable has been a game changer for my self-taped auditions! One of the standout features is how natural the voices sound, you can record your own voice, and the app transforms it into a completely different voice that feels real and engaging. It’s perfect for scenes where you need a reader, but you don’t have one available. The variety of voice options ensures that every addition feels authentic, and I can focus on my performance.

Another huge Plus is the excellent customer service. I had a few questions when I first started using the app and the support team was incredibly responsive and helpful that they quickly resolved my concerns and insured that I had a seamless experience.

For any actor needing a self tape without a reader available, Slatable is an invaluable tool. It saves time, provides amazing flexibility, and has become an essential part of self-tape auditions.
