SleepDrift: Sound Machine

Most sleep apps play you a recording. This one creates the sound from what you type. In seconds. Say what you want to hear — "rain on a canvas tent", or "a box fan in a big empty room" — and SleepDrift builds it on your iPhone. What you describe is never picked from a library. Because the sound is generated rather than recorded, it doesn't loop. Recorded tracks come back around every few minutes, and once you have heard the join you can't unhear it. There is no join here. WHAT YOU GET • Any sound you can describe • More than one thing at once: "a stream over rocks, birds in the trees" is made as two layers and mixed, so you can build the room you want • Twelve ready-made classics — white, brown and pink noise, a box fan, rain on a roof, ocean waves, a mountain creek, a campfire, a night train and more • One slider from warm to bright, instead of three separate noise files • A dice, for the nights when you can't think of anything • A sleep timer that fades out slowly, so nothing cuts off mid-breath • Gentle wake: your morning sound rises from a whisper over two minutes, with a notification as a backup if the app isn't running by then • Nightstand mode, an ultra-dim clock you can read at 3am, with backgrounds and an amber nightlight • Favourites kept for good, with icons you pick TYPE IN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE The app is in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese, and you can describe a sound in any of them. Your words are translated on the phone before the sound is made — nothing is sent anywhere. (Needs iOS 18 and Apple's language pack for your language.) IT RUNS ON YOUR PHONE No account and no servers. Nothing you type and nothing you make leaves the device, and after the download it needs no internet at all, so it works in airplane mode all night. FOR NURSERIES Guidance for infant sleep puts all-night sound under about 50 dB, with the speaker across the room rather than beside the cot. SleepDrift won't pretend to measure that; a phone can't do it reliably. The test that works is simpler: if you have to raise your voice over it, it is too loud.
