I used to find this app very easy to use. It’s gotten way more complicated than it needs to be.

Simply too many bugs
I have subscribed two different times and this last time, it completely locked up my desktop and I couldn’t shut it down. It’s too much trouble to import art from your desktop to your iPhone and do a decent job editing, this should work on your computer and it does not and for this price, it is not worth the subscription. Super frustrating, thought he had worked through these issues.

Shady, stay away from this app.
I tired this app for sculpture. It did not work and so I canceled the subscription. They continue to charge from six months later. Apple card won’t help, Goldman Sachs facilities this robbery each month, run, for your financial life. I will be contact the federal bank fraud people next.

A big fail on desktop - it’s a horrible user experience.
I’ve had this app installed for a while. I’m trying to add images to an existing layout. I can’t drag them around to rearrange, or add images to existing placeholders. The AI help bot says it’s a bug. A pretty big bug, I’d say. So far my experience has been that this app is worthless.
UPDATE:
I contacted support via email. There’s a link at the bottom of their website that goes to help.smartist.app, but ti leads to a failure page. Restarting the app on desktop did fix my click and drag problem, without their help.
There’s no way to save a session to continue it later. The Export function lets you export a jpeg or a png of the screen with a “Share” button, but the “Save” button apparently does nothing. I tried searching for a solution, and came up empty.
Somehow I discovered that the Smartist app saves the jpeg into the User Library/Containers folder with a long code name. No dialog to select the folder; no way to change its name. The bot couldn’t help me with that; and an email to the “help” desk was never responded to.
The biggest failure of this app is the lack of any clear documentation. Its quirky user interface and lack of features that have been with Mac for years lead me to recommend other ways of modeling artwork in a physical environment. This app has promise, and some of the customization features are interesting, like the ability to remove or add other objects seem like they’d be useful. But unexpected behavior changes your layout, and causes more headaches than it’s worth. WHen my (overpriced) subscription is up, I won’t be renewing.

Great way to display art at scale and what a time saver!
06/2026 — I’ve loved this app, but right now the iPad version of it isn’t working properly. Some of the mat options make the artwork become unmovable and the export option does not respond. I also find the amount of questions about the work unnecessary in order to just upload one. Lastly, it would be great if the account could sync on different devices for on the go access.
Using Smartist has saved me lots of time while letting me display my work beautifully! It’s an important part of helping people visualize art in their space.
I’m so happy with the way all the interior images respond to true scale and I don’t have to manually estimate proportions using other software.
They update the interiors often, so I can always create fresh images to show my work.

Great App with Helpful Support
Update: I recently experienced a serious issue where my saved artwork data disappeared, which was very stressful. However, the support team helped investigate the issue, and my data was eventually restored.
I appreciate their support and am relieved that everything is back. Smartist remains a very useful app for creating artwork mockups, and I hope the app will continue improving its data sync and backup reliability.

Signed up for free 7 day trial and was billed 8.99 straight away
Signed up for 7 day trial and was charged even though it was supposed to be free. Messaged support and didn’t receive a reply. The mock-ups are good but the app is massively overpriced. Presumably they can only make money by tricking people into paying

Yeah I could do this mockup manually but this makes it sooo much easier. Especially after the hard work of actually doing the piece. I don’t want the posting part to be more work than it needs to be.
Customer service bad
I have downloaded the app to check it if will fit my requirements, signed up for free trial but was charged for it. Cancelled the subscription before the free trial expired, but app still charged me a monthly subscription. The customer support team is unresponsive. Otherwise the app is pretty good, I just don’t feel that it is worth £19.99 a months for subscription.

Slow, Always Crashes, Unreliable
Very slow to load, consistently crashes, will lose past artworks and interiors uploaded. A lot of their interiors are very basic or not well designed

Please don't worry about your uploads—they are safely stored in the cloud, so you just need to resync your data in the app to see them. We add 10+ new interiors weekly to our full library, so if you have specific style requests, we’d love to hear your suggestions!

No free trial- they lie
I feel seriously misled by this app. It advertised a 7-day free trial, but the moment I signed up and entered my card details, I was charged immediately. That is not what most people understand as a “free trial.”
What is even more frustrating is that Apple refused to refund the payment, despite me explaining the situation clearly.
To make things worse, the app’s Help Center does not work, so there is no proper way to contact support or solve the issue.
This feels deceptive and unfair. Users should be fully informed before being charged. A free trial should actually be free.
