Crap. Nothing like the palm original.
If somebody wants to make a small fortune, they should bring the actual, original palm pilot space trader game to the iPhone. The one we wasted glorious days playing back in 2002. I, for one, am in for five bucks.
This is not that game. It's not even close.

Palm Version Way Better
The old palm version of this game had quests, more risky items (narcotics and firearms), told you what you paid for items at time of sale, you could attack police, jettison from the ship, retire on planets, and on and on. I've bought every planet, have all the upgrades, and best ship within 3 hours of buying the game. Not fun anymore. Please update to match original palm version!

Nice start
I remember playing this space trader on my palm pilot years ago and I would have to say that this version isn't quite as good as the one I played. I was disappointed to see that you can attack the police in this version as you could on the palm version...I also remember that you could dump/jettison your cargo, also there used to be "quests" like taking someone from one planet to another or delivering packages to certain planets within a certain period of time/lightyears. I think when you sell an item after arriving to the planet it should show the amount your selling it for in red if you are selling it for less than you bought it for. This version seems harder to get started than the palm version i keep running out of money and fuel...lol but over all it's a great start to what was an awesome game. The developer needs to update it and make it just like how the palm version was then you would have a true winner of a game!!!!
-------------------------------------------------- UPDATE: I tried to email the developer by tapping on his email address provided to you in the game but my email was returned back to me saying that it didn't exist. unless the developer is reading these comments I highly doubt we will see ANY updates which is why I am lowering my stars...I say that if your going to make a game or anything available on iTunes then you need to at minimum read the comments and follow through with the updates as you say in your description of the game...

Not Space Trader ... Yet
This game has promise but I was disappointed by it. I think most of the problems are caused by bugs. The price differentials seem to be off, everything seems to be the same price everywhere and with a trading game that isn't any fun.
The risky item (ONE illegal item???) "firearms" doesn't seem to be worth the risk.
It seems the developer spent more time thinking of types of government for all the planets.

Fun game!
I was looking for the old Palm version and glad to find this! Here's a tip: make a list of all the products for sale and the low to high prices for each. Play with pen and paper, and write down the per item cost of the things you buy. Then ignore the percentages- even in the far flung future, the game is still "buy low, sell high!"

Seems to be fun but I
I would like to play this one further but I can't seem to figure out how to refuel my ship and run out after three or so planet jumps. I have no idea how to actually buy more fuel and the tool tip only says to touch on the space ship, which brings up the planet commerce and upgrades. I see the buy button on other planets when I check them out but I those are never active so I end up stuck. I'm not sure if I'm just missing it or if it's bugged.

Good Game
It's a good game, although it appears that the glitchd on me, I can't buy anything anymore, the slider doesn't move. The only way to fix it is to start a new game and give up everything you built up :-(
Also, UPDATE!!! Ive been waiting for the update for a long time!

Lousy port of a great game
There was no reason to add animation to this game. There was no reason to add a planet-buying dynamic. The original 'Space Traders' was a great, free game. It didn't need animations or randomized economic conditions to be highly enjoyable. This developer had a great idea to port this to the iPod/iPhone, but flat out blew it with extraneous crap that was completely unnecessary. The gameplay experience has really suffered as a result. Oh... And let's not forget that the excellent freeware Space Traders is now a for-profit game. Not as good... but now costs money. A bad choice.

Great game, developer has great reponse to feedback given to make it even better with updates
This is a great game, alot like the old palm game but with a little more ability and depth. It has some differences but it also has cool new features too. I am really looking forward to the new version of the game with the factions and storyline. I would recommend getting it now at this price just in case the owner decides to increase the price with the new version of the game. Anyone who enjoys games like monopoly will enjoy this game, anyone who enjoys space combat battles will enjoy this game. Totally recommend it, especially with the future version coming out soon. The game developer is really listening to reviews and comments so I am sure that the new updates will be what everyone is looking for an whatever is lacking in previous versions will be fixed with the new one.

Too Hard
There is no apparent correlation to the predicted prices and the prices at arrival. Some adjustment while your ship is in transit is fine, but going from +7% to a loss is not acceptable. This game has so much promise but without some correlation and predictability in what to buy and where to sell it it is just a glorified guessing game. I look forward to the next version where there is some sort of limitation on how much prices can sway during the time that my ship is in transit. When that happens I will happily write a new review with a higher star rating.

Light Years of Potential
Elite broke ground and Privateer sunk its teeth deep into the pockets of Space Trader fans around the world, but for the younger gamer, Freelancer and the X series will probably be familiar trader landmarks. Kechbs Software’s Space Trader is the first of the genre to explore the App Store.
Gameplay and Presentation
Space Trader is as simplistic in sound and graphics as can be. The 2D graphics are colourful but very low detail and sound is a series of beeps and boops. However, gameplay is smooth and features a mix of proprietary menu graphics and iPhone OS GUI effects which are easy to actuate and interface with which make Space Trader an easy to pick up game.
The addition of global scoring is great as this game is meant for competition. Currently, there are only twenty to thirty people who have updated scores, but hopefully this number will soon increase.
Space Trader’s simplistic model works well enough for its presentation but when it comes to gameplay, falls short. For 1.99$, it offers very little while advertising a lot. Each universe is tiny and can be sussed out quickly and sucked dry for its trading utility. There are a handful of upgrades, a handful of items to buy and a handful of planets at which to barter items. It is heaps of fun, but it is way too short with too many bugs and inconsistencies.
Firstly, the maths are all off. If you have 771 Shields and you purchase 10% upgrade to your shields, your upgrade total should not be 781, but rather 848. Other items are supposed to be upgradeable only once but can be purchased infinately and then there are the fight scenes. Just run away - there is no point in fighting as the loot is worthless and the enemies are exact mirrors of your souped up ship. Finally, the scoring system is not updating anymore.
Conclusion
Though I think Space Traders is fun and addictive, it is too short and full of inconsistent errors or thinking to be worth 1.99$ to all but the most die-hard of trader fans. I have now dedicated over 2 hours into the game and believe that there was nowhere left to go about 1 hour into gameplay. When Kechbs Software can fix the inconsistencies and bugs, this game will be good, but when they can add replayability and true trading/fighting/exploration to the series, they will have a true hit at the App Store that is worth much more than 1.99$.
Space Trader gets an overly gracious Tap from TouchMyApps.

Find it too hard
Hard to make money. Trading varies so much. How about color coding the values in the sell screen when you arrive so you know if its green your in a positive. I can see variances of 1-2% but as the previous reviewer stated you can set out for a 10% increase and receive a 7% loss. This happens way too many times

Suggestions for improvement
Great game overall. A few suggestions for improvement however are the following;
- Banking system where you can borrow or deposit and pay (or get paid) with interest
- ability to retire to any planet you own after buying your first one
- put confirmation screen on the "New Game" button to keep you from accidentally deleting your current game in progress
- ability to have multiple "game save" slots to be able to go back and show your friends your favorite saved games
- ability to customize your character (name, abilities, levels, etc)
- add a plot background to the game to make it more immedssive instead of just mind-numbing trade after trade
- add quests and special missions that get you special items such as ship ugrades
- add ability to fly with companion co-pilots who have different skills and improve your chances in space combat
- add more ships

Great
Wence you pick it up you can't put it down beacuse it's a great game
Good start to a gr8 game
Good, but look at my report for my update ideas.
Almost there...
1.2 is a HUGE improvement. It isn't quite up to the quality of the Palm version, yet. Keep the updates coming!
Definately not Space Trader
where to begin...
Where is the personalized naming of your character? Where is the ability assignment for your character? Where is the back story? Where is the indepth and compelling game play? I feel this developer has scammed everyone based on name recognition but this is NOT-- and I mean N-O-T-- the classic Space Trader. This is something like Space Trader but not a reproduction of what the original designer created.
If you want a game more like the classic Space Trader game with a graphical upgrade check out "Galaxy on Fire".
To be fair, the positive side of this is... well honestly I didn't play the game long enough to see much positive about it.

Full of glitches! Do not buy unless upgraded!
I am lowering my rating of the game too one star. It is full of glitches and unless they fix them DO NOT BUY. At the rate that they are answering my problem they may never update.
Game was fun until it gave me negative money when I should have gotten 2 billion. What's up with that? Otherwise the game I fun.

Not Ready
I had high hopes for this game. The classic Palm "Space Trader" is what I was after, but unfortunately, this is merely a pretender. The main problem with this game is it's user-interface that forces you to make multiple taps to do mandatory tasks like buy fuel. Also, it seems that the differential in prices does not vary greatly.
