A truly fun & educational app
Learning about fire safety in a fun & educational way
In this app the goal is to help Sparky the Fire Dog ® and his pals solve a mystery. Strange things are happening at Aunt Dottie’s house and it is up to the child to solve it! By doing this, the target audience (children aged 6-8) learn about many important key fire safety lessons that are beneficial to everyday life.
Firstly, the child can select to read the story or play the game. By reading the story the user learns about crucial aspects of fire safety such as the significance of smoke alarms and what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. This is done through the inclusion of guided questions that encourage the child and the parents to discuss the story. Additionally there’s an enthusiastic narration that comes with each page to improve literacy and comprehension skills. However the read-to-myself mode allows the user to read by themselves- this challenges emerging and strong readers alike.
Play the interactive game & solve math problems to progress
The user can also play the interactive game and this is an enjoyable break from the reading. In order to progress, it is important to collect batteries (to power up) and smoke alarms. This is followed by a math problem (which includes addition, subtraction, multiplication etc.) which needs to be solved to move onto the next level.
For parents and educators
This app includes a section for parents & educators. Parents can download free fire safety resources from the website to further improve the child’s knowledge. There is also a list of games (for children as young as 3) that include Sparky the Fire Dog ® and other engaging characters.
Teachers can incorporate the app into the classroom to enable students to learn about fire safety while also honing literacy and maths skills. The materials range from PDF worksheets to fun music videos by award-winning kids’ bands StevenSongs and Recess Monkey. Both parents/educators and kids will find the experience of this app incredibly beneficial and entertaining- ensuring that Sparky the Fire Dog® will be a hero to many.
