Good concept needs some work

I used this for my kids school spelling test but I found myself looking else where for spelling practice and games in the App Store. The menu, play, and sneak peak buttons are very close together they need to be spaced our more or rearranged because if you accidentally push menu instead of play you have to start all the spelling practice over. You can’t go back to where you started. Also the auto voice doesn’t always pronounce the words correctly and/or can be hard to understand.like the word Protein. I like the idea of this and has potential it just needs some tinkering.

Thank you for your feedback. It would be really helpful if you are able to get in touch and let me know which device you are using so that I can have a look at the layout. Please also note that you can use it in landscape and portrait mode and these will have slightly different layouts.

This game is the best. In my opinion it is so helpful and I have aced all my spelling tests. most comment complain about it not having lines to tell you how much letters it is but if you like to think or your child likes to think and use there brain it is for you. I would recommend this for people who struggle to spell because it is a fun to push your self and if you want to improve you can it will congratulate you for getting a new high score. It's the best get is now!!!!!!!!

Excellent app!

This app has been a tremendous help to both of our kids with their weekly spelling lists that they are tested on at school. You can enter the words and record yourself saying them. It provides great motivation for the kids to get them all correct. Don’t listen to the negative reviews; those are just people who did not read what this app actually was. For those of us who were looking for something to help our kids with their weekly spelling lists, this is great!

Good but needs improvements

Great basic app and easy to learn how to use. Some suggestions for future releases:
* add repeat word feature (in case you couldn’t hear it first time)
* add import / export list to share between devices / with school friends etc
* keyboard layout is a little confusing
* add option to shuffle words in the list
My 10 yo daughter enjoys it for her spelling practice.

Frustrated

I paid for this and haven’t been able to use it at all. I was hoping to use it to help my son with spelling, but the app won’t let me enter a word in the word list. Disappointed

I'm very sorry that I somehow missed this comment as I could have helped you. Pressing the dismiss keyboard key instead of the enter key would have this affect. However the latest version behaves a little differently so it should solve your problem. If you are still having problems, please get in touch with me.

Looks like Hangman

This app looks good but doesn’t play like Hangman. It doesn’t show you how many letters make up the word, your words don’t come up randomly and it doesn’t show used letters. You literally need to know what word in your list the game is playing with. Sorry I bought this, maybe this will save you your $1.99

Dear James, Please check that your device isn't muted and privacy-microphone in the main device settings is enabled for Spelling Hangman, as you should hear the word that you are to spell out. You can also press the play' symbol if you need to repeat it. The idea is that it runs like (and prepares you for) a school spelling test. You listen to the word, enter the letters in order, but if you make a mistake you get a hangman stage. The 'sneaky peek' button is there to help you learn if you get stuck. It isn't a standard hangman game, hence naming it 'Spelling Hangman'.

Does not work

Could not edit any lists, add any words to it or records words, so a complete waste of £1.99!
A shame because an app where you can create your own spelling lists is a great idea.

Fabulous app!

We have used this amazing app for a few years now with my son, who is now in Year 5. Our daughter, now in Year 1, started using it last year. It has made all the difference to both our children’s learning. Also, many heartfelt thanks to the developer, who corresponded with me via FB messenger so quickly and helpfully about a couple of minor glitches, which were quickly resolved. Highly recommend this app!

Could be great but...

I have just downloaded this and played first time with my daughter. She really liked it, however unfortunately the sneak peek function doesn’t work. It just adds a piece to the hangman board instead of showing the word. Also once finished the test said we scored 0/10 but there were eight ticks. We scored 8/10. Can you help me get the app working properly?

Rubbish

Absolute rubbish. Painstakingly added 12 spelling tests - 120 words and all gone !! Only 5 words saved. What a waste of time and money.

It works... kind of.

I wanted to find a hangman game where I could write my own words - and it does that.

However, you should be aware of the following:
- it doesn’t show you how many letters are in the word you are guessing
- it doesn’t accept a letter unless it is the NEXT letter in the word (so if I guess “s” and it is in the word, but not until the end... it is counted as a mistake)
- it doesn’t show you what letters have already been guessed

It feels more like a spelling app than it does a hangman app. If you’re looking for hangman, I would NOT suggest this app.

Dear John. Thank you for the comments. Yes, it is more of a spelling test app, hence 'Spelling Hangman' instead of 'Hangman'. It was written for my son so that he could test his weekly word list, but as a game to make it fun. I wanted him to enter the letters as he would in the test. Showing the letters that have been used is a nice idea though.

Fun way to learn weekly spelling words.

My son was having a hard time with his weekly spelling words, so I downloaded this game and he loves it. Can’t wait to see how his tests turn out. Easy to input words.

PIN number required but not provided with purchase

Sorry to hear something has gone wrong for you. On your first use, you should be prompted to create a pin for use in the spelling test creation section. This is because you are able to share tests via email etc. Did you press a return key once the pin had been entered, or just dismiss the keyboard? Please try reinstalling and trying again. If you have any further problems, please get in touch via my Facebook page. It would be useful to know iOS version, device etc.

Does not work

Tried this and full of glitches. Says words like ‘won’t’ are spelled incorrectly when they’re correct.

Very poor quality app. Gave it one go and deleted. No preset words. Very basic.

So Crappy!

This app is a scam! This app does not have any words in it!! You have to add your own words to it and for that you have to pay 2 Bucks!!!

Buy it only if you have time to add words!!

Thank you for trying out Spelling Hangman. I'm sorry that it didn't meet your expectations. I wrote Spelling Hangman for my son in order to create a fun way to learn the weekly spelling lists that he received from school. It really worked for him so I wanted to make it available for other children to use. There are no preset words because I wanted to keep it specific and simple to configure. However I have received various requests to add some words so this is something I may add in the future. Please note though that it is possible to share word lists with other people. This will save some time. Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to discuss in further detail.

Just what I've been looking for, able to make your own list of spellings just brilliant. The passcode put me off but seemed I had a slow iPad. Can't wait to see what my son thinks of it. :-)

Useful app

This is a clever app that allows children to practice their weekly spelling tests in a fun way! You can also share tests around with friends, making it extremely useful to use inside and outside of the classroom! I highly recommend this app.

Well worth it!

Great educational fun app. I put my daughter's weekly spelling list into the app and she "played" and then got at least 9/10 but usually 10/10 each test. Then all the lists are in there for revision. Well worth the small price. Highly recommended.
