A life is spent when an attempt ends without winning - losing a level, or choosing to abandon one already in progress (confirmed first, so it is never accidental) - never just for starting a level. Run out and you will see a countdown to the next free life. There is no way to pay past it: Square Falls has no In-App Purchases at all, and no ads. Waiting always works.
