Why is the iOS 17 version crippled?

I downloaded the app in iOS 17.11.7 as the is the max version that my iPad support.
The app show the introductory text but it is FRUSTRATINGLY impossible to select any other reading material. The icon for selecting text is not there. I also have downloaded in my recent iPhone and it runs beautifully. Please make the text selection icon or an alternative menu available in a more full screen gui.
I wonder if these are apple tactics to silently obsolete old hardware.
