Not for rectangular tube

I’m not a steel professional, so wasn’t familiar with AISC sections. I thought this would handle calculations for the typical mild steel hollow rectangular sections hobbyists and fabricators weld things out of. It doesn’t do that, it’s only for structural steel used in buildings :-/

Minimal App

Very simple to use; however, it does not allow for you to have multiple load conditions (ie. a uniformly distributed load with a point load included) in your input and it limits you to only L/240 deflection. Also in the very rare condition where you find yourself designing a beam with only a point load (w/L over 240), it doesn’t allow you to input a specific distance from a moment to the point load. It automatically just puts it at midspan. No one designs to that. My clients require me to design with a minimum essential design... & that is worse case scenario. It is so minimal, that I find it totally useless.

If you're in the steel industry in any way you need this app.

I'm part owner of a steel fabrication company and this is one of the most useful apps I've ever seen. It takes all of the work out of doing any calculations to see if somethings going to work before going further with it. If you're involved with steel in any way or if you're an engineer. You need this app.

FAQ

What is Steel Beams Bulk Checker used for?

Steel Beams Bulk Checker is a tool for structural engineers to rapidly check if specific steel beam sections meet shear, bending, and deflection criteria based on user-defined parameters. It helps avoid trial-and-error selection of beams.

What engineering standards does Steel Beams Bulk Checker use?

The application utilizes the latest AISC v14 Database and an ASD9 based solver for its calculations. It supports yield values up to 65ksi / 450 MPa.

Can Steel Beams Bulk Checker handle different unit systems?

Yes, Steel Beams Bulk Checker supports both US Customary and Metric unit systems, allowing users to work with their preferred measurement standards.

How does Steel Beams Bulk Checker handle bracing conditions?

You can define bracing conditions at the beam ends, half or quarter of the span, or specify if the beam is fully braced. This flexibility allows for accurate analysis under various support scenarios.

What types of loads can Steel Beams Bulk Checker analyze?

The app can solve for point loads at mid-span or distributed loads. It also considers the self-weight of each beam if selected by the user.

Does Steel Beams Bulk Checker include all types of steel sections?

Currently, only singly or doubly symmetric shapes are considered. Single angles are not included, but double angles (2L) are, assuming continuous contact.

What information is provided in the detail window?

The detail window reports the maximum moment and shear, bending and allowed bending stress, deflections, and a summary of the problem setup. Users are responsible for determining acceptable deflection limits.

How often is Steel Beams Bulk Checker updated?

The app was last updated on May 25, 2020, with version 4.7. While updates may not be frequent, the core functionality remains robust for its intended purpose.
