Does the job

I like it a lot. I’ve been able to really improve my daily step count since purchasing. I don’t mind having to hit the action buttons to care for the pet since it’s very nostalgic of tamagotchis. I only wish there were more pet/animal options.

Freezes

App keeps freezing up phone. It also has moments where it doesn’t properly sync up number of steps

Needs Improvement

I REALLY tried to love this app (for months) and I love the idea but it has a major flaws, in my opinion.

The first is that it isn’t as well connected to the pedometer on my phone/Apple Watch that reflects my actual step count. So, I will surpass my daily goal, continuously close and reopen the app to reward my pet with it’s final treat and it still doesn’t show that I’ve met the daily goal to keep my pet happy and healthy.

Also, the biggest issue I have is that I have to manually “tend” to my pet regardless of how many steps I get. For example, I walk a lot sometimes and in a day that I got 18k+ steps, when my daily goal is much less, simply because I was too busy working or forgot to open the app to “feed” “water”, “clean” etc. my pet, it says “your pet it sick because you didn’t reach your daily step goal” which is absolutely not accurate.

I would love to give this app another try in the future, but paying monthly for something that’s not intuitive and makes me feel bad for forgetting to simply open the app and click buttons even though I hit and surpassed my step goal just ain’t it for me.

NOT FREE

I expected this to be a cute little app to watch my steps… reminded me of the tomagachi!! Then found out you have to pay for it.. HECK NO.

Response from developer

Hi there! We are so glad you like the concept!! We’re a small team building StepPals to make daily steps fun and help people get healthier. We understand if $2.99/week or $9.99/month isn't in your budget, but ratings really impact small teams like ours. If the only downside for you is that it isn’t free, please consider reflecting your experience in the reviews have a big impact on us. Appreciate you!

Does not always synch

The app does not always synch with your phone or Apple Watch. My sister and I both bought the app to be motivating but it’s depressing watching your pet get sick and die when you’ve walked all the steps and done all the things. I messaged support 3 days ago and got no response so here I am with my review. Maybe consider buying a weekly subscription to see how it works for you before committing to a whole year.

FAQ

What does StepPals do?

StepPals is a step tracker that gamifies your daily movement by linking your step count to the survival of a virtual pet. You need to meet your daily step goals to keep your digital companion alive, making fitness more engaging and emotionally rewarding.

How does the virtual pet mechanic work?

You set a daily step goal, and your virtual pet's health depends on you hitting it. If you miss a day, its health drops, and if you miss too many, it's gone. You can then start again with a new Pal and a new streak.

What are the subscription costs for StepPals?

StepPals offers a subscription model with a 3-day free trial. Options include Weekly ($2.99/week), Monthly ($9.99/month), and Yearly ($29.99/year). Subscriptions auto-renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the current period ends.

Is StepPals compatible with my device?

While specific compatibility details aren't listed, the app is available on the App Store, indicating it is designed for iOS devices. Users can manage their subscriptions through their App Store account settings.

Who would benefit from using StepPals?

This app is ideal for anyone who wants to walk more consistently, needs real accountability to move, is motivated by goals and a sense of guilt, enjoys old-school digital pets, or is tired of boring health apps.
