About

stir covers your whole night with one session. set the time you need to be up by, and start the night: white noise carries you to sleep and fades to silence before morning — white, pink or brown noise, a fan, wind, or ocean waves, looping seamlessly all night. then stir listens, calibrated to your room, so distant traffic never wakes you but the rustle of you naturally stirring does. it wakes you gently inside your wake window. miss the window, and the alarm sounds at your "up by" time no matter what — light and volume rising together like a private dawn. there is no clock on the night screen — no time, no countdown, not even the status bar. wake at 2am and a clock says you're in the middle of the night; wake at 5 and it says you didn't sleep enough. none of that helps, and it costs you the rest of the night. so stir takes the number away, and the arithmetic with it. what's left is a black sky where the real sun and moon ride their daily rings at their true positions, computed on your device. subtle and artistic if you ignore them; honest astronomy if you read them. when the moon touches the horizon line on screen, it is rising or setting outside your window. everything happens on your phone. no accounts, no analytics, no tracking. the microphone is only evaluated during your wake window and nothing is ever recorded. stir is open source.

What's New in stir

1.1.0

October 2, 2026

eleven wake sounds, and every one of them made by stir: gentle chime and soft bells are rebuilt, and deep bowl, temple bells, wind chimes, music box, marimba and first light are new. nothing in the app is licensed or downloaded any more — every sound has a recipe in the open source repository. settings is redrawn. one screen in the order a night happens, in stir's own colours, with plain words: alarm, wake if the phone moves, vibration. it opens with what stir does and carries how long last night ran. a word before you start if your battery is low and the phone isn't charging — a phone that dies rings neither the gentle alarm nor the backup one. importing your own sound is gone. with eleven wake sounds and six to sleep to, it was not worth the file picker — and nobody is left silent: you are back on the named sound you chose before it.
