About

Story Player for Twine lets you play interactive stories made with Twine® on your iPhone and iPad — the kind where you read a passage, then choose what happens next. Play stories you've written yourself, or ones you've downloaded from itch.io, IFDB, IFComp, the IF Archive, Spring Thing, authors' own websites… Read and choose for yourself, or let the app read the story aloud like an audiobook. Playing these stories in a phone browser is fragile: one accidental tap on Back closes the story, and your progress can disappear when the browser clears its data. Story Player is built so that never happens. HOW TO ADD A STORY 1. Get the story file (.html or .zip): export it from Twine (Build › Publish to File), get it from a friend, or download it in Safari from any story site. 2. In Story Player, tap + and choose the file. Or, wherever the file is (Files, Safari, Mail…), touch and hold it › Share › Story Player. 3. Start reading. No need to unzip .zip files. Note: some stories on the web can only be played online, because the author doesn't offer a download. YOUR SHELF • Every story gets a cover — from its own artwork when it has some — or you can pick a photo of your own. • Your shelf shows how far you've read in each story, and the one you read last is always on top — one tap to continue. • Search and sort your shelf; on iPad it becomes a grid of covers. • New version of a story? Import it and keep all your saves. • Writing in Twine? Publish to a file and play-test on your iPhone; after each change, just import the new version. NEVER LOSE YOUR PROGRESS • SugarCube, Harlowe 3 and Chapbook stories reopen exactly where you left off, even after you close the app or restart your phone. • Story Player keeps automatic copies over time. Saved over the wrong slot? Go back to an earlier moment in one tap. • See every save in a story, give saves names you'll remember, or delete the ones you no longer need. • No storage limit: long stories with big saves, and big story files with music and art, just work. • SugarCube's "Save to disk" and "Load from disk" work on iPhone. • Moving to a new device? Export all your saves as one file and open it there. LISTEN LIKE AN AUDIOBOOK • Story Player reads the story aloud with the voices on your device. No internet needed. • It recognizes the story's language and picks the most natural voice you have. Change the voice or speed any time. • The sentence being read is highlighted, so you can follow along. • Listening mode turns the screen dark to save battery. When a passage ends, the choices appear as large buttons — tap one to hear what happens next. • Can't wait? Tap a choice on the page at any time and the reading jumps straight to the new passage. • Keep listening with the screen locked: the passage plays to the end, then unlock to choose what happens next. COMFORTABLE ON A PHONE • Make text bigger or smaller without breaking the page. • Stories made for computer screens are fitted to your phone — no more tiny text. • Story too bright? Invert the colors for a dark page in one tap. • Keep the screen on while you read. • Every link and choice responds to the first tap — no double-tapping like in a phone browser. • Links to websites open in Safari, so your story stays open. • Works with VoiceOver and larger text sizes. SUPPORTED FORMATS Twine stories made with SugarCube 2, Harlowe 3, Chapbook and Snowman, including their images, music, video and sound. Snowman, Harlowe 1 and Harlowe 2 stories play, but don't yet reopen at the last passage. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account, no ads, no data collection. Your stories and saves stay on your device. Story Player doesn't include or sell stories — you play your own story files or ones you download yourself. Twine® is a registered trademark of the Interactive Fiction Technology Foundation (IFTF). Story Player is not affiliated with IFTF.
