What's New in String Tension

1.2.6

August 22, 2026

Two improvements in this update: (1) Added a 100 sq in head size — 100 sq in racquets are now a one-tap pick, and tennis head sizes show in square inches. (2) A much steadier meter: it now averages several taps and only locks a number once your taps agree, so you get one stable reading instead of a value that jumps every time. Thanks to the players who wrote in.

Inconsistent

I really wanted this app to work, but unfortunately it doesn’t! For one, the racket head size doesn’t have the correct size for a 100 sq in frame, one of the most common hoop sizes. Each time I got the app to register, it produced a different reading. I cannot rely on this app to give a consistent reading. 😢
Follow up: I changed the rating, not because of the app’s performance, but because of communication with the developers. Their response, and communications in private messages, tells me they are serious about creating an app that works.
Keep in mind, it is a work in progress and they listen to constructive feedback.

Response from developer

Thanks for the detailed feedback — you're right on both counts. We're adding the common frame sizes (including 100 sq in) and switching to a multi-pluck average with an octave-sanity check, so a single stray reading can't skew the result and readings stay repeatable. In the meantime, if you tell us your racquet and string we're happy to help you get a reliable baseline.

FAQ

How does String Tension estimate racquet string tension?

String Tension analyzes the vibration frequency of a plucked main string using your phone's microphone. This frequency is then converted into an estimated stringbed tension in kilograms or pounds.

Can String Tension track tension for different racquets?

Yes, you can set up a profile for each racquet, including its head size, string type, and gauge, to accurately track tension changes for tennis, squash, or badminton frames.

Does String Tension show how much string tension has dropped?

Yes, the app provides a history graph that visualizes how much your stringbed tension has decreased over time since it was freshly strung, allowing you to see percentage drops.

Will String Tension remind me when to restring?

You can set a specific tension threshold. String Tension will send you a reminder when your stringbed tension drops below this preferred level, preventing surprises during matches.

Does String Tension require an account to use?

No, the app works directly on your device and does not require you to create an account to log measurements or save racquet data.

Is String Tension accurate for precise tension readings?

Readings are relative estimates that depend on your specific frame and string. They are best used for tracking changes over time rather than as a certified gauge, as results can vary with technique and setup.

Does String Tension have ads?

Yes, String Tension contains advertisements. This allows the app to be offered for free to users.

What devices does String Tension support?

String Tension is currently supported on iPhones. The app was last updated on August 22, 2026, with version 1.2.6.
