The Right Way to do a Sequel

I don’t know if the devs still read these things, but it’d be cool if they did. I only recently found out about this sequel to arguably one of the best mobile games ever conceived, which is kind of strange to me. The only publicity I saw on this game was an ad from a while ago, and even then I remember thinking that it was either never coming out, or wasn’t real. Marketing for this game was a bit fumbled, but that’s okay.

I haven’t played this game as much as other reviewers have, but from what I’ve played so far, I could pretty confidently say that I don’t think I could go back to the original. The improved gameplay, better graphics, and more intuitive progression all create a much more interesting experience. But what I like is, at its core, it’s still Subway Surfers! Just now you don’t have to pay for boards, the maps are cooler, and each character has unique abilities. What’s not to like?

A few things.

Firstly, and I know this is kinda whatever cuz usually no one cares about this stuff, but I noticed a few reused animations. Which I mean, sure, devs gotta cut down development time somehow, but… something as unique as a character level up animation shouldn’t be reused. Fresh and Tricky having the same animation when they level up kind of rubbed me the wrong way, considering they’re both unlocked pretty early on. But hey, it’s not gameplay, so this isn’t really a problem. I’m just an animation guy that digs unique animations.

Secondly, why the hell are there so many currencies? I’m having a hard time keeping up with what I’m collecting most of the time. There are coins, keys, sodas (which replaced the keys original function of reviving, which I’m okay with), then there’s the surfer points, board points, exp points (that level up the player and not the characters?), the green things that let you play the unique runs, these weird triangle things whose purpose remain a mystery to me, and then surfer and board CREDITS, which are DIFFERENT to points… I dunno man. There’s a lot. It feels unnecessary.

All that to say that I do really like this game, I think it’s a great step up from the original, I just have a few gripes, that’s all.

TL;DR

Refresh on original gameplay, maintains charm, animations occasionally reused but whatever, too many currencies, but it’s ok I still like it a lot

Review

This game is genuinely so good, its a great game offline or online since you can do both and just a major step up from the original overall. Although i do have one complaint about the transfer from surfers to city, i lost a lot of my stuff that is in subway surfers but nonetheless an amazing game.

Great game

Wonderful game, love to play it

BEST GAME for car rides ever

Same as i remember just with new better graphics skin styles and more
I 100% recommend

Big upgrade over original

The game take the graphics and and some new mechanics to this game that elevated above the original, I wish though they would add subway showdown and other fun social modes to this game along with more collab skins etc for different characters

WOW

This game is amazing!!! And a great time killer, love all the Surfers and the new settings. Very cool!!! This game is my favourite game on my phone for sure! ❤️❤️❤️

I love this game

This game was soo much fun and the animation is so cool 😎 and beautiful too this is my favorite game ever!!

It's very cool, but there's one caveat

The game is very good, but there is a nuance. I've been playing on an android phone for a long time, and after switching to an iPhone, I ran into the problem that I can't transfer the progress I received on the Android to the iPhone version. All the desire to play has disappeared, the money that was earned has gone to waste

good but

when the game first came out it ran perfectly, but as soon as they updated the game for the first time the framerate of the game became bad and when you lose frames it doesn’t pick up your input so if you swipe to move the game will not move and you can die just because the game doesn’t work right. this NEVER happened when the game first came out but now it happens every single time i play

Just as fun as the first one

Only two issues. After you crash out and get to the part where it asks you to watch an ad to continue, I’ve had multiple issues with the game restarting after I finish those GOD awful and long ads forcing me to start over again anyways instead of taking me back to finish my run 🤣 I also wish we could collect boosts and use them throughout the game like the first Subway Surfers (ex: game 1 you could collect the boards and use them throughout the run) instead of only having access to them if I collect them on the run.

THEY MADE SUBWAY SURFERS 2 BEFORE GTA 6!

This is low-key an insane step up from the first game, genuinely pretty great.

HIGH SCORE GONEEE

Hi! I absolutely love the new game it has given me all the nostalgia! But…the last 2 times that I’ve played, the game has glitched mid game after I have beat my high score and the app crashed! When I went back into the app, it said I was under my original high score by under 100K. I thought maybe it was just my phone but it froze again mid game again today after I reached over 500K! I wouldn’t have been so upset but I worked my butt off for that score lol. So I took a screenshot of what my high score was (before the app crashed) and it was 540,847 and then I went back into the app, and now it says 477,413. Just wanted to bring this to your attention as I loved the game when it came out when I was a child! But no harm at all!! Thanks!

Surfing A.D.S. 🛹

I found Subway Surfers City after logging back in to the original — Subway Surfers. That original game was littered with forced advertisements, way too many events going on, and an overall crowded user interface. I’m happy to say that Subway Surfers City is, overall, a great improvement and updated version of that classic to mobile gaming. The art style pays homage while making it look sleeker at the same time! There are some new fun mechanics, unlocking new areas to run through is fun, and the city tour mode is decent! What really holds this back from being a modern day classic, are the ads. Obviously, no one loves ads but for a free-to-play game there needs to be some way to make money back. I can understand that through the option of paying for in-game currency, and maybe some other cosmetics, but overall paying for something in a game has always thrown me off. Especially with the season pass system. Thankfully, most characters and boards can be unlocked through time playing. It just becomes hard to strongly recommend the game when after every few runs you have to sit through a forced ad. Watching one for an extra life, for special loot, that’s fine. But the more ads feel forced down your throat (same with the “deals” to buy more in-game content) the less fun coming back to play feels. I also would love it if the main interface when you log into the game were cleaner, less messy with all of these buttons. Let the ambiance of the characters skating in the city take center stage rather than all of these pop-ups crowding the screen just like now in the original game.
