About

The best minutes for learning a word are the ones you'd lose anyway: on the bus, in a line, between two meetings. Every so often SwotWords puts a word on your Lock Screen — tap it, say whether you know the word, and it keeps coming back until you do. • Reminders on your terms. Pick how often, the hours and the days — weekends off, if you like. Leave a few unanswered, and SwotWords goes quiet until you open a card again — no hard feelings. • A widget on the Home Screen, and in CarPlay too. Answer cards right on it, without opening the app. • Apple Watch. Answer a card from your wrist while your phone stays in your pocket. ⌚ • iPad. Sort out your words on the big screen: folders, the list and the word you picked, all in view, in as many windows as you like. Best done from the couch. • Your own words. Type them in or import a list: a CSV file or plain “word - definition” lines. • No list yet? Any AI chatbot will write one at your level and on your topic — the import screen hands you the prompt. • Ready-made word sets. The 300 most useful words and 19 themes, from food and travel to feelings, in any two of 34 languages. • Numbers, for the brave. The card deals a random number to say in your head, then shows how it is spelled and how it sounds. Try 97 in French. • Folders, a transcription for each word if you want one, spoken words, a mode for typing the answer, and export to CSV. A word counts as learned after as many right answers as you set. • On the Mac too, in the menu bar, and just as free. iCloud keeps the same words on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac. • Shortcuts and Siri can add words, deal the next one and tell you how far along you are — or ask out loud: “Siri, quiz me in SwotWords.” SwotWords started on the Mac in 2017 as a small app for learning words in between other things, and we still learn our own words with it. Thank you for giving it a try! If something is missing or not working, “Contact us” in the app writes straight to us. Everything in the app is free. If it helps you, there is a tip jar in Settings.

What's New in SwotWords

2.0.1

October 18, 2026

SwotWords now has an iPad app, with the room an iPad gives it. • On iPad, your folders sit beside a table of words, and the word you pick opens right next to them. • Open as many windows as you like, side by side or in Stage Manager. • An extra large widget for the iPad's Home Screen, with cards you answer right on it. • On iPhone and iPad, pick out several words at once to move them into a folder or delete them. What came in 2.0, the first version for iPhone: • Apple Watch app, and iCloud keeps the same words on your iPhone, iPad, Mac and watch — answer on your wrist, and your iPhone knows. ⌚ • Ready-made word sets: the 300 most useful words and 19 themes, in any two of 34 languages. • A prompt that has any AI chatbot write you a word list, at the level and on the topic you pick. • A Home Screen widget that answers cards without opening the app. • Reminders keep to the hours and days you choose, and go quiet after a few are left unanswered. • Folders, transcriptions, spoken words and a mode for typing the answer. • Numbers: the card can deal a random number to say in the language you're learning — harder than it sounds. • Actions for Shortcuts and Siri: “Siri, quiz me in SwotWords.” • The app speaks 34 languages. Thank you for learning with SwotWords
