Ordering at a Japanese restaurant is rarely about reading the menu. It is about placing the order — four people, three dishes each, negotiated one item at a time through a phone translator while the waiter stands there waiting.
Tabelingo turns the whole menu into one finished order, shown in Japanese on screen and spoken out loud, so you ask once.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Photograph the menu — one page or several.
2. The app reads it and builds a structured menu: name, price, category.
3. Browse in your language, with prices converted to your currency.
4. Add what you want to the order, calmly, at your own pace.
5. Tap play. The app says your order in Japanese, out loud.
6. The waiter answers — record it, and the app translates and offers the next step. Sold out? One tap removes the dish.
WHAT EACH DISH SHOWS
- The Japanese name, so you can point at the printed menu
- The translated name and description
- The price in yen and in your currency
- Possible allergens
- Whether it is vegetarian, vegan or pescetarian — with five levels and a written note, because miso soup looks vegetarian and rarely is
- An illustration when the dish matches our curated catalogue, with the image source stated
QUICK PHRASES
Nine ready phrases in Japanese, with audio, in the order a meal happens: a table for four, an English menu, more water, the bathroom, do you take card, the bill. And the one that matters most — "does this contain ___?" — so you can confirm an ingredient with the person who actually knows.
ABOUT ALLERGENS — PLEASE READ
Tabelingo shows allergens a dish may contain. It never tells you a dish is safe. Recipes change between restaurants and between days, and no app can see the kitchen. Always confirm with the restaurant before you order — the app gives you the Japanese phrase to do exactly that.
The app does not certify halal or kosher.
LANGUAGES AND CURRENCIES
Interface and translated menus in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Thai, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.
Prices convert to 20 currencies, updated daily.
ALSO INCLUDED

- Dark theme, because izakayas are dimly lit
PLANS
Free — one menu per month, with the spoken order and the quick phrases.
Monthly, US$14.99 — an auto-renewing subscription that renews every month until you cancel. Up to 100 menus per month.
Lifetime, US$39.99 — a one-time purchase, no subscription and no renewal. Up to 1,000 menus in total.
The limits exist to prevent abuse, not to ration: 100 menus a month is about three a day, and a two-week trip uses fewer than twenty.
Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. A subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it in your Apple ID settings after purchase.
