Widget not refreshing

Like the app but seems that the widget doesn’t auto-update even with background app refresh on.

Not much point in a widget if you have to tap on (which opens the app) to get the latest updates 🤦🏻‍♂️

iPad Version

Please bring back the iPad version.

Subscription through Google Terrible Experience

While this is not necessarily a comment on the Age app I didn’t have another better place to leave my feedback and I am upset so forgive my rant.

I paid for a subscription through Google that was never recognised by the app. I had several back and forth messages with the Age customer service that then hand-balled me to Google and I was referred to countless unhelpful ‘help’ pages.

The Age claimed they cannot resolve the issue since it is with Google and Google’s customer resolution journey has been no better to be honest.

Yours sincerely, a very frustrated former Age subscriber.

Why is the app yelling at me?

The Age is great. I don’t appreciate that the app name under the icon is in all caps. At 5:38 am, I don’t want to be yelled at by THE AGE while waking up.

Cookie hell!

Almost every single day that I visit Target Time, I am presented with a screen to accept cookies. You want to give OVER TWO HUNDRED vendors access to my data.
I don’t want cookies. Rather than a simple “reject all” I am forced to scroll down through several pages of options, manually unselecting all the default options.
Yes, I am currently in Europe. Yes, they care about data privacy, as do I. But no - making it painful to reject cookies is NOT ACCEPTABLE. As a new subscriber, I am losing patience.

Subscription Issue

We resubscribed in iPhone App but status in Browse screen remained ‘Non Subscriber’.
Fixed in The Age app by logging out of our account then logging back in :—
Browser screen status then displayed ‘Subscriber’.
Gotta love The Age.

Awful new version

In addition to the ongoing frustrations with the over-sensitive pages going immediately to text-only, we now have the added freezing and slow-to-open problem. I suggest the designers of the app try and read it as a paper, and see for themselves, which is surely the idea, to experience how clunky it has become, rather than keep making changes for the worse. Why on earth was the old version changed, a year or two ago, when it was performing perfectly well.
And why doesn’t anyone respond to my questions when I send in feedback?

Edit: when is this disastrous app going to be fixed??? I have been told the app team are “actively resolving this …”, but still nothing. Just bring back the old app; it was just fine, thank you. The new Age app is a a step backwards, and that is saying something. Pages jump around, slower to advance, doesn’t take you back to the last page you were reading, “continued on page…” takes you away from the actual paper. Does anyone check these things?? As others have said, I just want to read the paper from front to back. Can we just have the old app back please? (And the day & time is no longer visible at the top of the page)

Edit: Still not at all user-friendly, despite multiple complaints (which are never acknowledged or attended to). I am sick of the page jumping to “read-only” version at the slightest touch anywhere in the body of the article. And “continued on page….” Is now extremely frustrating. Bring back the old version- whose idea was it to “fix” something that wasn’t broken?

Edit -agai!!
Still no improvement, still no response to concerns raised over and over again. PLEASE do something about the hyper-sensitive screen; I don’t want to be taken to text-only version, I just want to get to the continuation of the article.
Also, as others have said, it is crazy that we have to download the paper each time we go back to it. If using my iPad away from home I can’t access it,

And as others are also saying, the pages freeze a lot.
Why on earth the perfectly good old app was changed for such a disastrous version is beyond me.

Quizzes

Please fix the app so that quizzes open in the app like they used to rather than taking you to the website and then offering to open in the app!!!

Login problems

Why do I need to login every time I open the app? And it doesn’t use my saved passwords. It is very frustrating.

Terrible

If you are a subscriber this would have to be one of the most frustrating apps ever used. Trying to put in your credentials so you can view an article works about 20% of the time. Then you have to go and look at it in the browser which totally defeats the purpose of an app.

Still no comments

Sometimes, when a journalist neglects to include pertinent information in an article, that information can be found in the comments. But this app does not display reader comments. The developers have indicated this functionality will be added at some point, but alas their priority is in breaking, then fixing, sudoku. Please leave the poor puzzles alone, and devote resources to adding comment functionality. The Guardian app has had this for a while. Just copy them. Use AI. It’s sophisticated copying!

Why the change

I have been an Age reader for 41 years. The new updated format is a disaster. I use my iPad in landscape all the time and my holder is designed for that. You press on an article and it jumps to that story, not the way I would read a hard copy, then it jumps back not necessarily to where you were. It is much more difficult to navigate. Surely you can do better!

Latest update is a giant leap towards a worse experience

Despite what it says on the tin, my user experience has gone backwards since the recent update. In particular, the image of today’s paper freezes so often, and for so long, that it’s effectively unusable.

I relish browsing and sometimes discovering unexpected interesting articles in the well curated collection and arrangement of articles in the image of today’s paper. It’s so much more inviting than the crass and cliched click- bait ‘headlines’ of the full online version.

I only keep subscribing to The Age because of its curated offering of the news in the facsimile version. Without that, The Age would have nothing to make it stand out compared to alternative free online news sources.

But frankly the freezing of the facsimile version of the paper is now so frequent and persistent that it’s not worth persevering with trying to read it. Please please fix whatever bug got in through the recent update. (I’m on an iPad Pro second generation - getting oldish, but certainly not abandonware yet)

No good

I have stopped using this app. It freezes every 5 seconds and sometimes just closes.

Could be better

This app gives good access to the daily paper for subscribers. On my iPad, the version “Today’s Paper” is most useful. I find it annoying that on both iPad and iPhone, the list view of news stories appears to be random, not “most recent at top” or even “according to previously shown interest”. And when you click through to see an article it cannot be enlarged for easy reading, even though less than half the iPad screen is used. On the iPhone the app doesn’t rotate to Landscape, which could allow more comfortable reading with longer lines of print - and also no stretch-to-enlarge, of course. In general, the journalism at The Age is good - though notably fewer international and “non-pop” stories than there used to be. Even the local coverage seems pretty thin some days.

Freezing

This app freezes over and over again on both my iPads and my wife’s iPad. Infuriating! An app that accompanies a subscription of more than $30 a month should be high performance.
