Deaf-Owned, Deaf-Taught, Exceptional
As Program Director of Deaf Studies at BU Wheelock and the founding architect of Harvard's ASL program, I do not endorse language apps lightly. The ASL Shop earns it. It is Deaf owned and every instructor is Deaf, which matters: this is a language that must be taught by those who live it. The app pairs structured video lessons with a growing ASL dictionary, live group sessions, and something most apps miss entirely, Deaf culture taught as inseparable from the language. For Deaf people who never had the chance to learn ASL, this is a way back to your own language. It is never too late to claim it. I am very proud of this team. Big congratulations.

Lifetime subscription worthwhile!
All the teachers are Deaf and the signing is clear and easy to follow. Plus having had the app for a bit, updates are made frequently so I’m excited!
I love that they have a lifetime subscription. I got a lifetime subscription for the Calm app back before it was big and I am so glad I did because now its collection is extensive and it is soooooo expensive!! I’m thinking of it as investment, it’s worthwhile to buy in while it is affordable🤣
The voice control labeling is solid too (better than Duolingo) which is rare for apps, especially smaller ones.

Building Meaningful Connections Through ASL
As a Deaf person, I love this app! It is a great tool for schools and the community.
This app can help Deaf students feel more involved in public schools. Hearing kids can use it to learn sign language and have full access communication with their Deaf classmates.
It can also help hearing families who have a Deaf family member. They can learn sign language together and have more meaningful communication at home.
I also love that the app connects people with great teachers. Families can learn signs together and practice them at home.
I believe this app can help bring Deaf and hearing people closer together. It is a great way for everyone to learn, communicate, and build meaningful connections together.

Love this app!
I’ve really been enjoying learning ASL with this app. The lessons are fun, easy to follow, and the teachers are Deaf. The dictionary is really useful and I like the options they give you for the lessons (self-paced, live, practice groups, etc.) There’s even a community feature that reminds me of tik tok. You can just scroll through or you can post and comment on other people, which is really awesome when you’re just learning and don’t really have people to practice with. Overall love this app and am excited to learn!

The design is sooo pretty and everything is super easy to navigate. I especially love learning directly from Deaf instructors—their warm, positive energy makes learning ASL feel fun, welcoming, and authentic. Definitely recommend The ASL Shop! ✨
