Not impressed

Very frustrating that the music does not appear on one page. Not convenient for pianists.

We're happy to look into this. You can contact us through the app or you email more details on this to us using our online form. https://hymnary.org/info/email.html

Great across Apple devices!

I really appreciate using this app across my Mac, iPad, and iPhone—you never know when you’re going to need the hymnal! I especially like the ability to search, which is much quicker electronically, particularly for things like meter, with results showing you quickly hymn titles in addition to number. Using the app designed for iPad on a Mac has a few small quirks, but overall it’s great!

Thanks so much for this positive review. This sort of feedback is very encouraging to us in our work. Blessings,

Customer service non-existant

I purchased the keyboard edition in 2021. It recently reverted to the free edition. I contacted customer support through the app a week ago, and have yet to hear anything. I tried re-installing, updating, restoring purchases, but the version I paid for is no longer available to me.
Update: they did finally respond. Somehow, the wrong edition was selected in settings. Since I hadn’t opened the app in a while, I suspect this was reset in an update. The fact that it took a week and three attempts on my part (two through the app, and a bad review in the app store) to get a response was disappointing, especially for such an easy (but elusive) fix.

Most likely the edition setting became undone. From the settings on a hymn page (looks like a gear) the edition you purchased can be selected. The keyboard edition can be found under Print editions.

Tablet users

Great app for those who use tablet for church music!

Frustrating

The app is certainly usable for certain things but I wish I had spent the money on a paper hymnal instead. It's inexcusable to be missing hymns and charge the same amount as a new printed hymnal (and quite a bit more than a used one, as the UMH has been in print for decades now) - and it's particularly inexcusable to not make this clear up front before purchasing. This means the app is not usable as a replacement for a print hymnal.

The other frustrating thing is that the audio playback button fades out playback on the last few measures, to the point that the last few notes cannot be heard. I cannot imagine who would find this feature useful.

I usually find myself better served by a web search or YouTube, especially for the public domain hymns. Sure, that doesn't give me every hymn in order and with the same arrangement and text - but neither does this app.

Outstanding App!

I purchased the pew version, and this app is really outstanding…great value, excellent functionality & reliability, and responsive support. The only suggestion I can think of is to add the official hymnal supplements (“The Faith We Sing” and “Worship & Song”).

Response from developer

Our developer said: "Indexes are not browsable, however search understands author, tune, meter, scripture, and subject queries (as well as normal title/text searches). As of 2.1.0, the table of contents is available from the side menu; this ToC supports tap to jump directly to the hymn. " Does that help at all? >>>>> We have an update coming later this week that we think will address some issues. We'll be interested to know what you think. Thx.

setting not configurable

setting options are greyed out and you can't change font size, stanzas, etc.

Great until version 3.5

I love having this hymnal on my iPad for playing at church, nut ever since version 3.5 my AirTurn Duo BT106 won’t turn the pages. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there something I need to do to fix it? It is really difficult to turn the page manually, especially if it is a hymn that goes back and forth between 2 pages.

The Hymnal will not open

I have been using this Hymnal for several years with no problem. Today it will not open?? Not sure what is the problem. Does anyone else have this issue? This is an update about my issue. The problem was my iPad not the app. I rebooted the iPad, problem solved. This is a good app.

Update 12/7/2022. The app is fine, it was my iPad that was the problem, need to reboot the iPad.

Do not like the new page layout

I loved this app before you changed to flip page instead of scroll down to complete the hymn. Why did you do that? I choose a hymn each morning to put in my journal. It is much easier to scroll down when copying and singing along with my music I have on my iPad. Please change it back. I pay for this. Please know I put all information in my journal as well as the source.

This is a valid critique and we are happy to report that an option to switch between the two modes is coming very soon.

Copyrights confusion

In addition to what another reviewer has written, I’m shocked to find copyright blocks on songs from the 13th and 18th C. Charles Wesley is copyrighted? In which world.
The user interface is also pretty useless. Am deleting the app.

Outstanding App!

This app (I purchased the pew version) is really outstanding…great value, excellent functionality & reliability, and responsive support. Even though all of my concerns have been resolved (thank you!), I’m still looking forward to your next update.

Purchases not coming through

This app was good. The latest update is not allowing me to access my purchases. Purchased the C cleft instruments, should be flute access? I wish to get this to save time instead of physically rewriting music for advent. Please get it together

Do NOT purchase!!!

I purchased the full version of this app, for $25, and my music never showed up. I contacted Apple and they said there was nothing they could do and that this was an app developer issue. I’ve tried for weeks to get ahold of the app developer and haven’t been able to, and now I’m out $25!!!!!

Response from developer

We're sorry to hear you are having issues. Our apps work, and we stand behind them. We also respond promptly to all feedback. How have you tried to contact us? If you send an email to info@hymnary.org, we can probably take care of this issue in five minutes.

Last update was terrible

I use a STOMP WiFi page turner that has always worked fine with this hymnal. After the last update, though, I can now only page turn side to side from the first to the second page, and must manually SCROLL down to get back for the next verse, even though my STOMP is set on side to side page turn. This was all working perfectly before the update, which was a giant step backward.

We will investigate your issue ASAP. In the meantime could you fill out the form here so we can dig into this problem a little more deeply and hopefully resolve it ASAP? Thx. https://hymnary.org/support/ios/UMH

Needs major overhaul!!!

I cannot count the number of times I was in the middle of a service and this app would freeze, crash, or tell me I needed to redownload my purchased hymnals, causing my to run for a physical hymnal.

Response from developer

We apologize for this. We have an update coming soon that we believe will fix these issues. Thx.

The app just moved backwards

Before the update you could search by number or title from any place in the app. Now you have to always go back to the Home Screen to search. The app is now clunkier than before.

Response from developer

You should be able to search from any page by clicking the menu button in the upper-right corner and choosing “Search”

Functionality taken away?????????

Why would you ever take features away? You used to be able to switch hymns by entering the number from a numeric pad display at the top of the screen. Now it goes to a completely blank page????? Also, the set list used to show up on top of the current hymn, not it goes to a separate page as well? Why would you take away features that worked????? SO frustrating.

Some features are now missing. And please give us the index!

Every time I open the app, it defaults to displaying the cover page with a search box. I used to be able to easily click to my playlist and now I have to perform a fake search to display anything besides the cover to get to it. (And the recent big update deleted my carefully curated playlist without warning!). Also, I can no longer tap on the left or right side of a displayed hymn to "page" through the hymnal but thankfully found out that you can swipe left or right. I can't tell if the pages at the back have been included which was my only complaint before - I dont want to search for it- I want to peruse and see the actual text and items included by the hymnal creator in their index. Lastly, I use a bluetooth page turner and when I have it connected, I am unable to type. So now that you have to type in the hymn number to navigate, instead of clicking numbered buttons on the screen, I have to disable my bluetooth, search, re-enable my bluetooth, make sure the page turner re-connected, and then I can play the next hymn.
