MoreThe Untempered Cosmos is an application that transforms the positions and brightness of celestial objects into a unique, spatialized musical composition. It's designed to be an immersive experience rather than a traditional song.
The app reads your location to determine which stars and planets are above your horizon, assigning each a sustained sine tone. Brighter objects are louder, and their position in the sky dictates their presence in the 3D audio space.
No, there is no playback in the usual sense. The soundscape is dynamic and non-repeating, changing as the Earth turns and celestial objects rise and set.
It uses just intonation, tuned to a single low D, with every audible tone a whole-number ratio above it. This tuning system aims for pure consonance between frequencies.
The app includes 88 objects: the Sun, the Moon, the five naked-eye planets, and 81 named stars down to magnitude 2.5. Constellations are also treated as chords.
Based on the provided data, The Untempered Cosmos is available on iPhone and iPod. Platform compatibility for other devices is not specified.
The Untempered Cosmos is a paid application priced at $3.99.
The app was last updated on May 12, 2026, with version 1.0.1. The developer notes that the catalog will continue to grow, suggesting future updates.
