Its sad the only app for black american xpats stops working. hopefully the creating puts some funds into getting better programmers and developers.
Puts users at risk
There are so few safe spaces for Black people to find community. I wanted to be part of this one as a Black American who has lived abroad for over 5 years now. Unfortunately, forcing details about where I’m from and my current location places me and my family in economic or physical risk. I reached out about this but I guess they don’t care enough to even respond. I wish this app gave users the choice to disclose when they are comfortable where they are from and/or currently settled so all interested Black users could participate without sacrificing safety in an unnecessary way. Please be safe, fam. You’d be surprised how the current administration uses spaces like these to break down our communities.

Very insightful
I’m giving it a one star because I was not welcome in the app at all I’m actually half African American and Hispanic. I simply put a hello new to community comment and the creator wasn’t too nice but I saw how they welcomed other people such as black people I guess I didn’t have enough melanin to be welcomed. Oh well

Exceptional and helpful
The Xpat app has helped me in my planning phase of global exploration. You can connect with other likeminded people who are also wanting to go abroad. It makes the process less overwhelming and seem doable.

I Want to be a Fan
I really want to be a fan of this app. Every few weeks my email becomes invalid and I can’t sign in, I can’t sign up again and I can’t change my password.

I have been a member of the XPAT community for more than a year I’m sure. I have enjoyed the positive dialogue between people who are already living abroad, and those people who are aspiring to live abroad. The conversations are always respectful and helpful. It’s a great space ❤️

White men giving advice?!
I was muted after pointing out that a white man was giving race-related “advice” on the app based on his “research”. He was highlighting racism abroad in a country he had never been to, folks. Peak cringe, I know! I was currently in that country and found his advice to be out of pocket and expressed this. I see now that I was a bit of a fool thinking the app was a safe space for Black women. I naively brought this to the attention of the creator’s account. Shar the creator had previously reached out to me for a spotlight feature which could have been cute. When I flagged that this white man was interacting on posts not based on his lived experience (as a white man dealing with/witnessing anti-Black racism), I was muted. Or rather, when I made a post addressed to Black people only, I was muted. As a woman I think it is important to have safe spaces to communicate within our community but such a place has yet to be created. This white man remains on the app, probably giving race-related advice he knows nothing about, but such is life. I must say that I enjoyed the app before I flagged the presence of white men unironically weighing in on racism abroad.

1,000% recommended. This app is one of a kind! I’ve been traveling for over a decade and with all the technological advances that have percolated on our radars, including those that claim to support diversity and community, an app like this one has never been available to connect, encourage, educate, support, and share stories amongst black expats.
