Excellent adaptation of an excellent board game. Good multiplayer options and challenges to keep it fresh.
Classic
Despite having known “child enthusiast” Bill Gates as a playable leader, it is a classic. Great game I often come back to. A little hard to pick up, it does take some time to fully grasp how all the systems and resources are connected but the tutorial is both helpful and entertaining. Plus there is a ton of challenges if you want to try something different. Devs clearly put a lot of effort into the game and it shows.

Not only the board game itself is genius but digital implementation is amazing too! We love it as a family game!

Wonderful worlds
It’s wonderful to escape every morning on my phone to Through the Ages, where I can build the pyramids as well as play great people like Boudicca, Napoleon, and Nelson Mandela!

I love this game. 5 stars regardless, but since this latest update, all the UI elements have been shifted in strange ways. The card row is set too far right, there is uncomfortable space to the right of the leader pictures below the card row, etc.
Quality of life
This is a textbook example of how quality of life features can elevate an app (or a game) to greatness. So much thought has been put into the user experience here, and as a result it’s one of the best turn-based videogames ever made. The care over these QoL features are, I believe, why the app has such a loyal online community. Small things like the way you can navigate to another game from the menu of another with a single tap, or the generous undo button, or the stats screen, provide countless ways other board game apps fall short. It’s compare it to something like Chess.com’s excellent app. The only way it could be better would be if it implemented the iPhone’s haptics.

Layered with wonderful complexity
It’s a fantastic game with loads of complexity and nuance. The risk reward trade offs for the moves you make are true to the theme of the game - manage your civilisation well and enjoy the fruits of your labour, but get too greedy or put all your eggs in one basket and watch it slide out of control. If you like Catan you’ll love this!

Does the AI cheat?
Play this all the time on hard and it’s one of the toughest games. But I am amazed how often Dark Ages comes up when you are about to play a government for example. I’ve learned to just expect things like that all game long. Similarly if you build the wonder that lets you get an island without having one in your hand, you probably will never draw one. Little behind on military, don’t count on ever drawing a military tactic card. Maybe it’s just chance but it’s surprising. And when you attack the AI their hands seem stacked with good military tactics to defend. Every now and then I delete it because it seems like blatant cheating but I come back to it.
