Great tool to have on smart phone

I appreciate this evidence-based app for helping me to understand the time of divergence of two taxa. For instance, I just found out today that anteaters and aardvarks likely split evolutionarily about 100 million years ago! Not everyone wonders about this, but for those who do, this app is a great reference.

Needs update for iPhone X

It’s great, but would be nice if the layout worked for “new” phones.

Great educational tool

While the app is somewhat prone to crashing on occasion, it’s a great educational tool for showing how close or distant two organism’s common ancestor is. Despite not being a teacher or officially a biology major myself (yet), I’ve been able to use this app to teach friends about relations between organisms.

FAQ

What does the TimeTree app do?

TimeTree provides a public knowledge base for information on the evolutionary timescale of life. It allows users to explore thousands of divergence times among organisms as found in scientific literature. The app uses a tree-based system to identify molecular time estimates for the divergence of chosen organisms and presents summary statistics.

What kind of data does TimeTree 4 contain?

TimeTree 4 contains data from 2,274 studies, encompassing information on 50,632 species. The project aims to add more data in the future as it becomes available from researchers.

How do I use TimeTree to compare species?

To compare species, you enter the names of the two taxa you wish to compare into the search window. The application will then present the results on a set of self-explanatory tabs, detailing divergence times and related statistics.

Is TimeTree 4 compatible with my device?

TimeTree 4 requires iOS 8.0 or newer to function. Please ensure your device meets this minimum operating system requirement for installation and use.

Is there a cost to use TimeTree?

The TimeTree application is available for free. There are no costs associated with downloading or using the app, and it does not feature in-app purchases or advertisements.
