User reviews

Cute game. Great Art.

From downloading this game you can obviously see that a lot of work has gone into it. The art is cute and very well made. The ideas were thought out as well. The reason why I gave this 4 stars is because of the way the game works in general. For example, when the game starts speeding up... No matter how good you are at memorizing hirigana, even if you were matching shape names to shapes or something that everyone would know, you can’t move your squirrel from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen in time. Make the squirrel move faster please. You are physically unable to win this game because the screen and level moves faster than your squirrel can select the options ( answers ).

Hi, Thanks for the review! In the next update we will make Riku faster! Until then there are easier and slower game modes already included so you might give a try! Thank you once again.

Impossibly glitchy

It’s a cute idea but the lag time and lack of response to movement commands makes it impossible to play.

Hi basil, Sorry to hear that you have issues with Tokyo Ride. We tested the app on several iPhones, including pretty old ones, but experienced no lag at all. However in the next update we will adjust the speed settings so you may give one more try!

Beautiful but not a great way to learn.

The developers are definitely great at making beautiful games. But I didn’t find that it had a great method for learning new words or characters. It was a fun way to review words I already knew with speed time trials and it had a few descriptions of the major tourist attractions of Tokyo. But I am looking for an app that will teach me words and kanji to help me pass the JLPT and I just don’t see this app as being what I need for that. And you have to pay for anything past the kana and numbers.

I recommend the developers to rework the learning aspect of this app or to just make beautiful games because they clearly are capable of that.

Hello, Thanks for your review. The speedy game modes are mostly for practicing the characters you already know, speed and confidence in reading are both essential in order to pass the JLPT exams with Tokyo Ride you can test your skills. We also have a slow paced study mode with unlimited lives, kanji cards (all for free) and in the new update you can check the correct answer during the rides, if you made a mistake. Hopefully these additions can help you study for the test. Good luck!

So fun, and designed really well

I downloaded this as I’ve recently started learning Japanese. I’ve been doing it for like four months, so I can read Hiragana and Katakana but I’ve started learning kanji and sentence structure and realized that it takes some time to process Kana when actually reading. This app is helpful as when I’m playing I’m able to read and hear it out loud and instantly have to connect it, combined with actions to match up the syllable and the sound. I haven’t had it for long but it’s really well designed. Plus the app is super cute!!!
