About

Most ear training apps hand you thirteen intervals and tell you to memorise them. That is why most people quit in the first week. Tonestep starts somewhere else: teaching you to hear where a note sits inside a key. It is the skill that actually transfers to playing by ear, and everything else is built on top of it. A CURRICULUM, NOT A PILE OF DRILLS 112 stages across 11 chapters, in a deliberate order — from finding the tonic, through the perfect intervals, major versus minor, the triad family, the seven scale degrees, modes, seventh chords, cadences, and finally Free Field, where there is no key centre, the root is random, and the clock is running. Difficulty does not just mean "more items". Tonestep measures how easily two sounds are confused, so a stage asking you to separate a perfect fifth from a perfect fourth is correctly harder than one mixing a fifth with a minor second — even though both have two options. FIFTEEN TRAINING MODULES Intervals, chords, scales, functional ear, chord progressions, chord inversions, rhythm, melodic dictation, note identification, relative pitch, absolute pitch, interval comparison, error detection, jazz chords, and singing practice with live pitch detection through your microphone. IT REMEMBERS WHAT YOU FIND HARD Every answer feeds a spaced repetition engine that schedules the things you keep missing to come back exactly when you are about to forget them. Your daily session is built from what you are weakest at, not from a random shuffle. PLAY ALONG ON PIANO Connect a MIDI keyboard, or use the on-screen one, and play through a piece while Tonestep judges your timing note by note. BUILT FOR PRACTICE, NOT FOR ATTENTION No ads. No feed. No interruptions in the middle of a listening exercise. Streaks, XP and achievements are there to get you to come back tomorrow, and nothing else. YOUR DATA STAYS ON YOUR DEVICE Practice history never leaves your phone. Microphone audio is analysed live on device to detect pitch, and is never recorded, stored or uploaded. FREE AND PRO The first seven chapters — 70 stages — are free, a complete arc from your first tonic to modes and pentatonics. Tonestep Pro unlocks the remaining chapters, all fifteen modules, spaced repetition across everything, and full analytics.
