You get an identification, a period, an honest opinion on whether it looks genuine, an assessment of condition, and a value range with the reasoning behind it. WHAT YOU GET FROM ONE PHOTOGRAPH • What it is — form, category, style, and the period it belongs to • The maker's mark, read and explained, with the transcription so you can check it against the piece in your hand • How it was made — the construction details that date an object more reliably than its shape • Condition, fault by fault, and what each one does to the value • Auction and retail ranges, which are two different numbers, with the comparable sales behind them • What would settle it — the specific thing to look for if the answer is uncertain IT TELLS YOU WHEN IT DOES NOT KNOW Most of the value in an appraisal is knowing how much to trust it. Trove says when the photographs were not good enough, when a mark is unreadable, when a piece could be a later reproduction rather than the real thing, and when the honest answer is that it cannot tell.
