This update adds optional readout of image blur for objects at the extremes of depth of field and at focus (where image blur will be non-zero if you opt to include the effects of diffraction). Why would this be useful? After all, image blur at the extremes of depth of field should simply be your specified circle of confusion. Well, not if you focus beyond the hyperlocal distance. Some landscape photographers place greater emphasis on image sharpness for far objects (the horizon or, say, a line of trees on a ridge) than for near objects. They reason that the eye/brain expects distant objects to be sharp but can tolerate a wee bit of image blur up close. So they focus a little beyond the hyperlocal distance. Well, now you can have a readout of image blur and better judge where you would like to place focus. By the way: You'll have the far limit pointer at infinity, but don't lock it in place. Locking it engages Hyperfocal Mode, which you don't want in this case. The update also adds more flexible options with regard to switching off numerical readouts, for those who prefer a more minimalist interface — one that relies on the use of analog scales. Superbly done!

The simplicity of the interface is both elegant and brilliant.

I would have been perfectly happy with the free version, but I want to reward the developer for such an awesome app, so I also purchased this paid version.

Indispensable for landscape work

The old depth of field tables assumed too much: a rather generous circle of confusion (“blur-spot” - based on old low-res equipment) and acceptable focus was always assumed to go all the way to infinity. But what if you have a 50Mp full-frame sensor, a high-res lens, and the most distant object in the frame is quite close?

I have been using this app for a few years now, and refer to it on every shoot. I use a Nikon Z 7 with the 14-30 f4 S, 24-70 f4 S, 24-70 f2.8 S, and 70-200 f4 AF-S. This is a high-res system, and I find a circle of confusion setting of 20 nanometers to be about right for this sensor when making very large prints (tho still experimenting). I love being able to set the circle of confusion with a continuously-adjustable slider, and how the app indicates which sensor and film sizes generally correspond to each circle size.

When you move a slider (either f-stop or distance), the other slider moves itself to correspond to the change in the slider you are moving. For example if you move the f-stop slider from f2.8 to f8, the other slider will increase the DoF (distance between near and far focus points increases).

The way I usually use the app is:
1. set the focal length I’m using (say 28mm)
2. usually set the f-stop to f8 or f11
3. lock the closest distance marker to my estimated distance to the nearest object in the frame
4. the 2 other markers now tell me the hyperfocal distance (distance to set focus at) and the farthest distance with acceptable focus. Based on that farthest distance, I then decide whether to alter my lens settings use focus stacking, or alter my composition.

It’s simple, elegant, brilliant, and adds tremendously to the precision and enjoyment of your photography. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

New features not working. No lock icons for depth sliders.

Exactly what i needed!! Straight forward, simple, and fast. Not sure why the other guy said this app was "unusable" for not having predefined cameras in the app. You dont need that silly. Just know what sensor / film size you have. His lack of knowledge doesn't make this a bad app. This app works fantastic.
