About
Trugs Take It turns phonics practice into a card game children actually want to play. Teach Reading Using Games
Turn a card. Read the word. Then decide - keep it, or take one from your opponent. Every turn is a decoding opportunity dressed up as a decision, and children read far more words in ten minutes of play than in ten minutes of drill.
HOW IT PLAYS
Tap the deck to turn a card and read the word aloud. Choose Take It to keep the card and score, or take a card from Trug to get ahead. Whoever collects the most cards wins the stage. Games are short by design, so they fit a spare five minutes at home or a slot in a busy intervention session.
BUILT ON THE TRUGS PROGRAMME
Every word comes from trugs -Teach Reading Using Games - the structured, systematic phonics programme used by teachers, tutors and specialist assessors. Words are strictly decodable and introduced in a fixed order, so a child only ever meets sounds they have already been taught. Nothing has to be guessed from context or memorised as a shape.
CREATED BY A DYSLEXIA SPECIALIST
trugs was designed by Joanna Jeffery MBE, a specialist dyslexia teacher with over thirty years in the classroom. She built the games around a simple observation: children learn to read faster when they are enjoying themselves, and a struggling reader will happily read fifty words in a game they would never read from a list. The phonic progression is numbered and sequential, so nothing is left to chance - every stage builds only on what came before.
FIFTEEN STAGES, THREE LEVELS
Level 1 - Foundation: Stages 1 to 5 Level 2 - Vowel Power: Stages 6 to 10 Level 3 - Advanced: Stages 11 to 15
Start where the child is and move on when they are ready. Stages can be replayed as often as you like; repetition is the point.

WHO IT IS FOR
Children learning to read. Children who need more repetition than a classroom day allows. Older struggling readers who want practice material that does not look babyish. Parents supporting reading at home between sessions, and teachers, tutors and specialist assessors who already use trugs and want a digital way to extend it.
From Sensory App House Ltd and Read Successfully Ltd - the owners of Trugs.
We build assistive technology for people who find reading hard. Take It comes from the same team as the trugs cards range and is designed to sit alongside it, not replace it - the physical cards and the app cover the same stages, in the same order.
