This iOS remake is a 2.5 star mixed bag

1) First of all, I am HAPPY to see this old Sega CD J-RPG classic back into the mainstream. And for under $6 bucks, it is worth it.

2) It is clear that several major great upgrades have been made to this game. The ability to expedite exp and gold earning by 4x rate of original game are THE best upgrade made. This is critically important, as the GRIND for exp and gold in the Sega CD original was unbearable. If you are like me and most 1990s-early 2000 J-RPG style gamers, you enjoy story with a moderate number of random battles. Grinding out levels and gold gets old fast (and why so many cheat devices came out in that period, like Action Replay and Game Genie, to reduce the grind). In this regard will like this remake’s exp/gold boosts! 👍🏻

You can also turn off random encounters to get somewhere fast (be careful NOT to do it that too often or low level will speed doom at mandatory boss battles!).

3) Here is where I think this is remake has failed at its worst: they RUINED the original Sega CD high quality movie voices and cut many of the clips!!! 😖 WHY?!?

The original game voice work on Sega CD is extremely good HQ quality to this day. This remake’s voice acting is horrible and the sound is low. The opening sequence totally sucked. Also, why change the names of places and characters (while giving ability to rename??)? Bizarre.

I was also sad to see this remake did not add a “stat change” at shops, to easily see if an item sold would increase or decrease character stats. This is a small, yet awesome quality of life upgrade.

4) Finally, despite the many upgrades to graphics, the video graphic quality is subpar and that is worst letdown. One would expect the video/cutscene imagery quality to be sharpened… did not happen.

Am I still happy to have purchased this game? YES! Will I enjoy this little 1990s J-RPG gem? Oh yeah. 2.5 stars out of 5.

If cutscene videos are properly updated or use the Sega CD ones, then it will be a 4.5 out of 5 for me. Give this blast from the past a try, great for killing time waiting at dentist lobby or on a long flight! :)

It’s great!

Boom

Controller Support!

Makes it SO MUCH BETTER! One of my favorites to play now. Thank you!

Unbelievable Support of a Sega CD classic!!

This was my very first purchase on my iPhone back in 2008! Not only is it updated but now works on my Apple TV and my silicon Mac and is continuously improved! Absolutely incredible! More companies should take this as an example!

Hooray For Vay!

I came across this game a few months ago, and just recently completed it. Great port of a classic game, with a wonderful storyline… and it looks amazing on Apple TV. Classic RPG at its finest!

Is Gorgeus

Thanks Somoga!!!

Is a wonderful game and wonderful port, please bring back more classics rpgs

Excellent control options

This is a pleasure to play on mobile—I thought I’d stick with the traditional on-screen digital analog stick, but the point-and-click navigation is really smooth and has been an easy way to play the game either one-handed or when I’m out and about and can’t use my bluetooth controller. I love playing old-school JRPG’s, and I’ve been enjoying the monster designs and the combat system in Vay. The company behind the game keeps adding quality of life updates too, so that’s always a plus. The original cut-scenes in the game are old but gold, as they say, and I recommend this game for anyone that loves adventure stories.

Awesome Sega CD Port!

I had a lot of fun with Vay, it’s a port of the original sega cd game from 1993. Classic RPG, but includes modern improvements to make it entertaining. I really liked the option to have the 16 bit backgrounds or the HD updated ones. For those who want less grind, there’s options to increase the xp and gold you get from the battles. This was much appreciated as there were times I didn’t want to grind just to afford better armor.
One gripe, the names are all changed from the original, so when you use a walkthrough or look for help it can be confusing. Weapons, armor, and items are all called something different. It would be nice to have an option to switch the names to the original so you can match up items with what they are referred to online.
Overall I’m really happy with the purchase and had a lot of fun playing through. I’d love to see more sega cd remakes from working design! Thanks devs!!

Free Update

Pretty good update especially since owners of the previous version got it free.

Stumbled upon this by accident

Thank you for the update, it’s amazing!

For some reason I cannot fathom I was looking up old Working Designs games and noticed there was an iOS port of Vay. I owned, and I fact still own, the SegaCD version of this game. The control scheme is atrocious but I couldn't pass this game up for $0.99. Other than the fact that movement is highly annoying this is an amazing classic RPG.

Response from developer

We're glad you're enjoying the update! We hope the controls are better for you now with the many updates we've made there.

Magic mislabeled

Overall, the game is decent. My only real gripe is magic is mislabeled. I thought that my casters were getting duplicate spells for some reason, but when I clicked on then they did other things with more mp cost. For example, Pottle had a second mend on his menu for 2 mp. If that is selected in combat, it makes the team escape combat. I really hate having to click spells to find out what they do and how much they cost. Second minor gripe, I had items that are for use in combat that either would not show up in the item menu or would not let me click them, such as devils spark

A Faithful Port, But

At the time of release, controller support was not supported in iOS. That said, if the developers of this port can keep up with the iOS changes that have run many games into the I OS graveyard than they could take the extra time to add controller support to this title which would make it a much more enjoyable experience.

In terms of the game itself, there are much better iOS RPG games to play on the platform at this point and unless you are aiming at nostalgia or curious about the Sega CD, this is a title better off dismissed for more relevant gaming experiences.

Great classic rpg (originally released on the Sega CD )

This rpg is simply amazing with its good turn based combat, cool story, and neat graphics, it is wonderful.

Like the game but…

I like the game but would love controller support. I have trouble playing with screen controls so it makes me reluctant to choose Vay when I could play Lunar which has controller.

Greatness Awaits

If you like the game, this is a great way to play the game. Enjoy yourself.

Good game with some problems

The games super fun the only problem is I don’t get the video to play but the game works and the developers are still fixing bugs after a long time so I’m glad they are still improving
