Know a car's problems before you buy it.
Scan or type any VIN and VINsight shows what owners have reported going wrong with that model year, which nearby years drew the most complaints, and every recall issued for the model — plus crash-test stars, specs and fuel costs. All from official U.S. government data, on one screen.
KNOWN PROBLEMS, IN OWNERS' OWN WORDS
- Owner complaints filed with NHTSA for the model year, grouped by part: power train, engine, electrical, brakes and more
- How many complaints each part drew, with crash and fire counts
- The newest reports owners wrote for each part, so you see what actually happened
- A full sample report on a real car the first time you open the app, before you scan anything
SPOT THE PROBLEM YEARS
- Complaints and recalls for the same model, up to two years before and after
- See at a glance which nearby year drew the most complaints and which drew the fewest
EVERY RECALL, AND WHAT TO DO
- Every recall NHTSA has issued for the year, make and model, newest first, with the campaign number, the risk and the remedy
- A clear warning when NHTSA tells owners to park the car, or to park it outside
- A shortcut to NHTSA's VIN lookup to see whether a specific car's recalls were repaired
- New-recall alerts for a saved car: a notification when NHTSA issues a new recall for it
THE FULL PICTURE IN SECONDS
- Scan the VIN with your camera or type it in; every VIN is validated on your device
- Decoded specs: year, make, model, trim, body, engine, horsepower, fuel type, transmission, drivetrain, assembly plant and more
- NHTSA crash-test stars: overall, frontal, side and rollover
- EPA fuel economy: city, highway and combined MPG, an estimated yearly fuel cost, and range for electric vehicles
- A garage for the cars you own or are shopping for
- Two cars side by side
- Share a summary card, or export a PDF report for a buyer, a seller or your mechanic
BUILT ON OFFICIAL DATA
Everything comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Complaints are reported by owners and are not verified by NHTSA. Recalls are issued for a model, not for one car: confirm a specific car's repair status with its VIN at NHTSA or a dealer. The information is for reference and is not a safety guarantee.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
VINsight shows vehicle information only. It never returns an owner's name, address or any personal data, and it is not a tool for finding people. Your garage and your recall alerts stay on your device. No account, no tracking.
