What's New in Walkie Talkie P2P Legacy

1.3.5

January 12, 2025

Walkie Talkie P2P has been rebranded to DirectTalk. Version 2 is now available as a discounted app upgrade for current version 1 users, and includes many requested features. You'll receive a notification within the app if your device is compatible and eligible for upgrading to DirectTalk 2. This legacy version update also fixes an issue where the app may fail to (re)establish new or previously-lost connections while in the background, and where the app occasionally display errors in situations where there's no real issue.

Finally a walkie talkie app that works well, no ads!

Well done! The only app that I found to date that works as intended without ads or tricks or catches. Pay for it one off and it just works well!

Truly peer-to-peer!

I have had a look at the network requests this app makes when in use and can confirm there’s nothing but local bonjour and direct connections to other phones running the app, it’s actually off-line. Doesn’t even seem to ping an analytics server or anything!

That’s also when using it over a network, if you’re disconnected and off grid completely it uses Bluetooth so it’s 100% peer to peer and not using anything on the internet, this mode also works well!

The only issue I have is that once disconnected, there’s no means to “trigger” someone else’s device to connect, even if you’re in Bluetooth range. They have to open the app for a little first and they become available, but if you’re in different rooms or further apart in a networked building, you have to resort to traditional online messaging to get the other side to open the app before you can talk. I suspect this is a limitation of iOS and not a choice of the app developer. Though if there was a way to do this, even if convoluted, that would be amazing and make the whole process truly offline.

Fantastic!

The newest update seems to fix the dropped connection issues. I use it to talk to my kiddo when hauling her in a bike trailer, and it’s perfect for that.

Would love to see support for an external PTT button in the future.

Perfect offline/no-Internet Walkie Talkie app

I spent a bit of time looking for a Walkie Talkie app I could use with my kid and only worked via Bluetooth and/or WiFi Direct so they couldn’t use it to communicate with strangers on the Internet and, as the other reviewer said 4 years ago, this tiny app is great for kids and simple for them to use. It worked perfectly between a device running iOS 12 and another running iOS 15. I also like that sent audio is played back on the receiving device(s) when the screen is locked.

Rock solid!

This app is absolutely rock solid! I’ve been using it to communicate with a friend in separate rooms (separated by one wall and about 5 m apart) with both devices on the same LAN, and messages are sent and received by the other party almost instantly. The app even queues up voice messages if you’re still listening to one while more are coming in! I also received confirmation from the developer that the app does in fact encrypt all communications through the encryption supplied by Apple’s Multipeer Connectivity framework.

Thanks for developing this app!
