About
Whence lays open where the devices around you actually come from — what you are connected to, and what you are holding.
■ Looking outward: what your Wi-Fi actually is
• Reads the BSSID of the access point you're on and resolves the manufacturer from the IEEE registry
• When the BSSID is a locally administered address, it says so — such addresses do not identify a real manufacturer. The three possible causes are shown side by side rather than picking one for you.
■ Looking inward: what this iPhone is made of
• Core split, native resolution and refresh rate, per-lens camera parameters, sensors and radios, storage and power — all measured directly
• Model specifications from a bundled catalog, cross-checked against what was measured, with the result shown either way
■ Every value is labeled with where it came from
Measured, catalog, inferred, unavailable — four distinct provenance levels. Anything inferred is visually de-emphasized and carries an explanation. You can see at a glance what was actually read.
■ We say plainly what cannot be read
Battery health, cycle count, and the real suppliers of the display and battery are not available to third-party apps on iOS. This app tells you it cannot read them, rather than leaving a blank or filling in an estimate. Any app claiming to detect these directly on an iPhone is not telling you the truth.
■ Privacy
• Makes no network requests at all — not merely no external ones. All manufacturer and model data ships inside the app.
• Collects nothing, uploads nothing.
• Declares exactly one permission: location. It is used solely to satisfy iOS's precondition for reading Wi-Fi information — no coordinates are requested, stored, or transmitted.
