About
Where People Live maps the race and ethnicity of the United States using official U.S. Census Bureau data, from whole states down to individual city blocks.
ZOOM FROM STATES TO BLOCKS
Start with the whole country, then zoom in to see counties, census tracts and, in every state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico, 2020 Census blocks. Each area is colored by its largest group, so patterns stand out at a glance.
ONE DOT PER PERSON
Zoom in close and the map turns into a dot map: one dot for every person (or every few people when zoomed out). Dots skip parks, schools, airports and other land where nobody lives.
TAP ANY AREA FOR THE FULL BREAKDOWN
Tap a state, county, tract or block to see its population and the share of each group: Hispanic or Latino, White, Black, Asian, American Indian & Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander, Other race, and Two or more races.
SEARCH CITIES AND ADDRESSES
• Browse more than 32,000 cities, towns and census-designated places. Search, filter by state, city size or group share, and sort by population or any group's share.
• Look up an address to open the exact 2020 Census block it's in.
• Start the map on your own area, or jump there anytime.
SHARE WHAT YOU FIND
Share any view or area as a link. It opens in the app, or on wherepeople.live for anyone without it.
DATA YOU CAN TRUST
• States, counties, tracts and places: American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates
• Blocks: 2020 Census redistricting data (P.L. 94-171)
• Address matching: U.S. Census Bureau Geocoder
All groups except Hispanic or Latino are non-Hispanic, as in Census tables.
FREE AND PRIVATE
No ads, no account, no tracking. Your location is optional and used only to show the map there.
Where People Live is for anyone curious about the communities around them: students, teachers, journalists, researchers, planners and the simply curious. This product uses Census Bureau data but is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau.

• Favorites: tap the heart on any state, county, tract or block to save it, then find all your saved areas in the menu. Tap one to fly straight back to it. • Richer map colors: each area's shade now shows how dominant its largest group is: lighter where neighborhoods are mixed, darker where one group makes up most residents. The legend explains the scale. • A cleaner map: Search sits top left, and Favorites, Legend, Share, Support and more are gathered in a new menu at the top right. • Share any area straight from its details. • Support and Privacy Policy now open right inside the app.
