Wilf Goes Skiing

Cross the road. Hire your skis. Get down in one piece. A love letter to an 8 bit classic of 1982, played to death on my Spectrum back in the day. Wilf has forty coins, no sense of danger, and a mountain to get down. Every day starts at the roadside. Dodge four lanes of traffic to reach the ski shop, hire a pair, and take the lift up. Every day the hill gets steeper, the trees get thicker and the skis get more fragile. Miss a gate and you lose points. Hit a tree and you lose a ski. Get run over and the ambulance takes your money, and it charges more as the days go by. Run out of money and that is the run. CARVE THE PISTE Slalom gates, moguls, ice, snowballs rolling down behind you and rocks coming off the walls. Better skis are faster and tougher, if you can afford them. FLY THE CANYON Trade the skis for a wingsuit and throw yourself down a gorge instead. Rings to thread, stone needles to miss, and a landing target at the bottom that pays for precision. FIVE DAYS TO GET GOOD Day one is gentle. By day five the mountain is as mean as it gets, and it keeps stacking trees, rocks and fragility on top of that for as long as you survive.
