About
Word Salad Surgery makes up words. Not typos, not anagrams: fresh, pronounceable nonsense, stitched together from donated parts, every so often.
With Apple Intelligence, each word arrives as a proper dictionary entry, written on your device or on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute: a part of speech, a one-line definition, and an emoji to match.
Squibpizzation (n.): a sudden cloud of glitter that tickles the nose and vanishes into a sneeze
Hopumscotch (v.): to fling pebbles at a wall while chanting riddles, always forgetting the punchline
HOW IT WORKS
• About once an hour (you set the timing, from a minute to a day), a new word arrives as a quiet notification with no sound, and the old ones are tidied away.
• Real syllable surgery: onsets swapped, syllables transplanted, vowels shifted, with a sprinkling of other languages.
• Apple Intelligence picks the funniest of several candidates and writes its entry.
• Can't wait? Tap New Word for one on the spot.
• Star your favorites, and copy or share any word with its definition.
TELL A STORY
Tap the open book, and Apple Intelligence writes a short story that uses your word just as its definition says. Want a different one? Ask for another story.
ON EVERY SCREEN
• iPhone and iPad: Pragmaphilia's Dictionary, set like a real one, plus the Word of the Hour widget for the Home Screen and the Lock Screen.
• Apple Watch: the latest word and its definition on your wrist, and complications for your watch face. The words come from your iPhone.
• Mac: it lives in the menu bar, the latest word one click away.
IN YOUR LANGUAGE
The app speaks English, Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Maltese, Basque, Brazilian Portuguese, and Traditional Chinese.
SEASON TO TASTE
Choose the part of speech, the language of the definitions, an optional theme ("a rainy Monday"), and the look: cream or white paper, light or dark. Pause Words when you need to concentrate.
ABOUT APPLE INTELLIGENCE
Definitions and stories need Apple Intelligence, turned on, on a device that supports it. Without it, the words still come, just without definitions, and Settings says why.
PRIVACY
Word Salad Surgery collects nothing: no accounts, no analytics, no ads, and no tracking. Your words are made on your own device or on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which stores nothing, and they stay with you. As Pragmaphilia Labs puts it: "We don't want to deal with our own stuff, let alone yours."
TIPS
The app is free. If it makes you smile, the tip jar keeps the lab running. Tips are optional and unlock nothing.

What's New in Word Salad Surgery
1.2
October 30, 2026
Word Salad Surgery can now use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute: where it’s available, Apple Intelligence writes the definitions and stories with its larger model on Apple’s servers, which use each request only to answer it and store nothing. Elsewhere, everything is still made on your device. Settings shows when it’s in use.
