About

Wordroot is a dictionary that shows you where words come from. Look up any English word and get clean definitions plus the full etymology chain — Middle English, Old English, Latin, Ancient Greek, Proto-Germanic, all the way back to Proto-Indo-European where the trail exists. • Fast search with definitions grouped by part of speech • Etymology chain showing each ancestor, its language, and how the word arrived (inherited, derived, or borrowed) • A word of the day to start from • No ads, no accounts, no tracking Definitions and etymologies come from Wiktionary (CC BY-SA 4.0).

What's New in Wordroot

2.0.0

October 29, 2026

Wordroot 2.0 shows where every word comes from as a tree. Start at today's word and follow it back through Latin and Greek to Proto-Indo-European. Tap any ancestor to open it. Under the tree you get words that share the same root. Heart brings courage, credit and cardiology. Hear each word and see how it is said. Save words, find the ones you looked up, or roll a random one. Suggestions show up while you type, and a prefix and suffix index sits at the bottom of the home screen. Put the word of the day on your Home Screen. Look up any word from Shortcuts, Siri or Spotlight, and on the Mac from the Services menu. Words you looked up open without a connection. A new typeface, a bolder icon, and every control now sits at the bottom, where your thumb is.
