I think it works
I tried this on my Wunderlinq. The app could do with a little more explanation. Whilst it did tell me my firmware was v1.8 it doesn't tell you if it is the latest. No files came up to download so I assume it is the latest.
It would be useful if the app notified users an update was available. I am not sure what benefits that brings to the Wunderlinq app itself either.
All in all a nice idea but a bit perplexing from a users point of view.
