The best and only app to make a real custom keyboard on iPhone

I’m a linguist who’s very interested in writing systems, so this app is a godsend. Theres nothing else like it at all, and it keeps getting better with new updates. There’s so much you can do, especially with the environment feature that I haven’t even began to mess with yet. It’s intuitive to work with and not too complicated to make what you want in most cases. My only gripes are one or two minor glitches, the fact that not every character in Unicode is included in the character list, and some characters and are rendered as tofu, but that seems like an Apple problem.

Why is this pay to use?

I wanted to use this to make a keyboard for a conlang I’m working on and thought that this was a good app to choose, I was wrong. To use a keyboard that I made I have to pay to use it and it also doesn’t help that the “help” button doesn’t really do much to help you get characters onto your keyboard. I was really confused about how to do it, literally nothing I did work. This had huge potential if you could use the keyboard you made. But you have to BUY to use which doesn’t make sense. And I don’t believe I’m high or anything. Seriously, fix these two main issues and it is a five star rating.

Can’t do anything without paying

It’s fun to make keyboards, but I want to be able to use them, or at least copy and paste them for free. Is that too much to ask?

Why

Ok so the app is good but the only bad part I hate is how I need to BUY the custom keyboard I made… it took hours designing the custom keyboard just to realize that I need to pay 7$.

It’s good

paid?

umm, not by any means a "bad choice" as this is a very powerful tool for a mobile app. however, if i must pay $7 dollars to even start to use the app i intended it to use for, i might just simply not use it. i wont pay, so i apologize, but it really did kind of ruin my dreams of making a custom form of english.

this however does not mean the app is completely useless.
it really does seem like a powerhouse of a tool, but i dont think there's enough confidence in the world of conlanging to pay $7 dollars for just full time use for a keyboard they arent sure anyone will ever use. it's little, but there are certainly younger conlangers like me that just simply want to have a keyboard for my language.

that's all, have a great day!! nice app :3

Powerful, but not too complex

xKeyboard is a surprisingly powerful fully-custom keyboard maker (not just over the top skins on top of your normal keyboard) that still manages to avoid being too obtuse—looking at you, Ukelele (their typo, not mine). Obviously, some complication is needed, but it seems to only be used where necessary, and functionality and use is very self-explanatory (with the occasional hint text).

Anyone into conlangs or smaller minority languages should absolutely look into this app. It misses some creature comforts, like key haptics and Apple‘s press-and-hold-to-move-the-cursor functionality, but it’s absolutely worth it for its incredible functionality.

Also, being able to share your custom layouts with others is a neat extra feature, especially for minority-language communities.

Overall, y‘all did an amazing job on this app. Please continue to update it to keep it functional in later versions of iOS (in case Apple decides to deprecate an old API or something). Thank you so much for time and effort into developing this gem!

Horrible!!!

It is hard to figure out. There's no swipe and you cannot move the cursor with the spacebar.

Good

Every once in a while it loads regular keyboard insteaf of custom one sometimes

Paid

I used to love this app years ago, but now you need to pay $6.99 to use any keyboard you make.

thought was free

i wasted 1 hour on making a keyboard for the standard galactic alphabet. 1/10.

Swipe

Why no swipe option when typing??

Confusing

There are lots of options for what you can do here but they are all wasted on me because I cannot figure out this app. After downloading and deleting multiple times, I have not been able to figure out how to make a custom keyboard, which is why I went on a search for different apps and found one (I won’t mention the name cuz I don’t want this apps popularity to go down)
Please make a tutorial or guide on how to use this because the other app I found is extremely straight forward and has a guide. I have made a custom layout that I want to get serious with but it’s too small in the other app so maybe you guys could make your app simpler to help with the issue (I’m also going to say this issue on the other app in case they fix it first).

Response from developer

We need to make the operation simpler and clearer, and add more help documents. :-)

Honest and Useful

App is paid and it is clearly stated, I love that you can test out its features before you buy it to ensure it’s got everything you need. Some features from a normal keyboard are missing which is understandable, I do hope they are added in future if possible

Cap Lock would be a good thing to have.

Constantly hitting the Cap button while typing acronyms could be eliminated, making for a better experience.

Great but you need VIP

This app is amazing in its ability to customize a keyboard. Unfortunately, if you want to use your custom keyboard, you need to get VIP. I’d rate this 5 stars if this wasn’t the case. I’d rather have a lot of ads between menus than have a paywall behind a basic feature.

Help

I’m trying to find the Cryllic keyboard so I can type the multiocular o, but it’s not there. Can you please add it?

So cool

Great for Conlangs
