Measure, visualize, and record magnetic fields with precision — right from your iPhone. Physics Toolbox Magnetometer displays the magnetic field vector in x, y, and z dimensions along with total magnitude in microteslas (µT) or gauss, giving you the data you need for serious lab work or casual exploration. Three ways to view your data: - Chart — real-time graph with toggleable axes, adjustable line width, and fullscreen mode - Digital — large numeric readout for quick at-a-glance measurements - Compass — live heading with True North and Magnetic North display Built for the lab and the field: - Record and export data as CSV for analysis in other software - Adjustable sample rate from 1 to 100 Hz - Signal filters to reduce noise - Detects permanent magnets, electromagnetic fields, and background geomagnetic field Classroom-ready experiments: The magnetometer is well-suited for determining the inverse-square law for a point-source magnet, measuring the magnetic field produced by a solenoid, or capturing the periodic field variations of audio speakers and magnetic plate stirrers. Whether you are a physics student, teacher, engineer, or curious mind, Physics Toolbox Magnetometer turns your device into a capable scientific instrument.

Discover the invisible universe right in your pocket! SORAMAME is an innovative citizen science app that transforms your smartphone into a real cosmic ray detector. Every second, invisible high-energy particles from deep space are raining down on Earth. By using your device's camera sensor, SORAMAME allows you to capture and record these microscopic cosmic events. Whether you are a science enthusiast, a student, or just curious about the universe, you can easily contribute to global space research. Simply cover your rear camera to block out all light, press play, and let your smartphone catch the invisible hits from the cosmos! ## How It Works Your smartphone's CMOS image sensor is highly sensitive not just to visible light, but also to high-energy particles like muons. When the camera is completely shielded from light, the sensor acts as a particle detector. When a cosmic ray strikes the sensor, it leaves a faint but detectable signal—which SORAMAME captures and analyzes in real-time. ## Key Features Real-Time Detection: Watch your screen as cosmic ray hits are detected and recorded instantly. Global Observation Map: See where cosmic rays are being detected around the world! Your data contributes to a global map shared by other citizen scientists. Offline Mode: Exploring off the grid? No problem. SORAMAME saves your detection data (images and coordinates) locally when you are offline and automatically uploads it to the central server once your network connection is restored. Privacy-Friendly: Your location data is slightly blurred on the public map to ensure your privacy remains fully protected. Easy Setup: No extra hardware required. Just a smartphone and a dark environment (or a simple piece of black tape to cover the lens). ## Important Note for Accurate Measurement To detect cosmic rays accurately, the camera sensor must be in complete darkness. Please shield the rear camera from light entirely. The app includes a light-leak detection feature and will alert you (ERROR: Please shield the rear camera from light) if the environment is too bright. For best results, we recommend leaving the app running for at least 3 hours to stabilize the background noise learning. Join the SORAMAME project today, and let's map the cosmic rays of our universe together! https://soramame.n.kanagawa-u.ac.jp/en/

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Cosmic Ray Detector SORAMAME at none against Physics Toolbox Magnetometer's 1. Cosmic Ray Detector SORAMAME also leads on update cadence (every 2 weeks vs every 13 months) and review sentiment (100% vs 80%). Physics Toolbox Magnetometer's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.8). On price, ratings volume, ads and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Physics Toolbox Magnetometer sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Cosmic Ray Detector SORAMAME asks for nothing beyond the download.
Physics Toolbox Magnetometer holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 8 and 4 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 80% of Physics Toolbox Magnetometer's written reviews are positive against 100% of Cosmic Ray Detector SORAMAME's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Physics Toolbox Magnetometer ships an update every 13 months, Cosmic Ray Detector SORAMAME every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 29, 2026 and October 27, 2026 respectively.
