This app on Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is aimed at patients and professionals alike. For patients it aims to demystify ECT and thereby address the stigma that exists around the treatment. For professionals it is a training tool for ECT prescribers, psychiatry trainees and mental health nurses. ECT is a specialised treatment used in psychiatry practice mainly for depression. App content is presented in multimedia formats; video, text and audio and is pre-packaged for use as an offline phone or tablet app. The information within the videos is delivered by clinical professionals who give accounts of their roles, responsibilities and finer details around the ECT procedure from start to finish, both from a patient experience and professional performance perspective. A patient has also given an account of her own experience of ECT, of how her attitudes to the treatment have changed over time and how ECT has helped to lift her out of severe depression. Note: The app is approximately 120Mb to download so using WiFi is recommended to avoid data charges.
Haptic Heart
Read full descriptionHide full description
Haptic Heard: A novel haptic cardiac simulator designed to help medical students and junior resident doctors practice their cardiovascular examination techniques! Haptic Heart generates patterns of vibrations designed to mimic the human heartbeat. Patterns are displayed alongside a phonocardiogram and can be interpreted both tactilely and auditorily via a stethoscope. Haptic Heart can generate additional heart sounds, murmurs or a combination of both. The patterns of vibrations are calculated dynamically on the device allowing you to practice at different heart rates and see how this changes the pattern. You're also able to adjust the intensity of different elements within the pattern test yourself using the in-built quiz function. Please note that these materials are for use as an educational tool and are not a source of medical decision making advice. Supported Devices: Unfortunately due to hardware limitations only the iPhone 8 and later are supported when using Haptic Heart. Due to lack of required hardware it is not possible to use the application on iPad.
