Have you (or maybe one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear? It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others. Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it? Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning. One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones. The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale. And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter: - who you are - an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician; - how old you are - a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult; - what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one). The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day. I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed a mobile app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

Perfect pitch and ear training in 5 minutes a day. Hear a tone — name the note. Nine difficulty levels from beginner to chord progressions, free to start. Absolute Pitch Trainer turns ear training into a daily habit you'll actually keep. Hear a pure tone. Tap the note you heard. Watch your accuracy climb session over session — through nine levels of difficulty, from three colored notes for absolute beginners to full chord progressions and melodies for serious students. THE SCIENCE Folk wisdom says perfect pitch is "inborn or never." That's only half the story. Children can develop full absolute pitch during a critical childhood window — especially with early musical training. But adult ears keep learning too: focused, repeated practice still sharpens accurate note recognition at any age. We built the app on the part of the science that works for grown-up brains. BUILT FOR REAL EARS • 9 difficulty levels — from 3 notes with color hints to full chords and melodies • Three game modes — Practice (calm, no pressure), Quiz (timed, scored) and Weak Notes (drills exactly the notes you miss) • Daily Challenge — a fresh test every day to keep the streak alive • Reference tuning fork — tap for a clean C-D-E-F-G-A-B reference scale • A real recorded concert grand, every note tuned exactly to A = 440 Hz — or the classic E-Piano PROGRESSION YOU CAN FEEL • XP and ranked progression from beginner to master • Two streak systems side-by-side — a daily-play streak that rewards showing up across sessions, plus an in-quiz answer streak that ignites an "On Fire" mode once you chain enough correct answers in a row • Achievement system across Common / Rare / Epic / Legendary rarities • Per-note mastery tracking — after every round, see which notes you missed and what you heard instead • Streak calendar showing every day you played this month STATS YOU'LL ACTUALLY READ • Historical accuracy curve — 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, or a full year of progress • Time played, total quizzes, correct answers, longest streak • Note mastery rings for every pitch class • Game Center leaderboards for career XP and best quiz score POLISH WHERE IT MATTERS • Four hand-tuned color palettes (Tube Glow, Jukebox Chrome, Reel-to-Reel, Rainbow Pride) • Multiple alternate app icons • Optional daily reminders so a busy week doesn't break your streak • iCloud sync — your progress moves with you to a new iPhone and survives a reinstall • Six languages: English, Deutsch, Español, Français, 日本語, 简体中文 PREMIUM Premium Lifetime is a one-time purchase, no subscription. Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: Absolute Pitch Trainer at every 4 days against Functional Ear Trainer's every 7 months. Functional Ear Trainer's advantage is ratings volume (3.7K vs 2) and device support (3 vs 1). On price, rating, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Functional Ear Trainer sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Absolute Pitch Trainer sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.9 for Functional Ear Trainer against 5.0 for Absolute Pitch Trainer. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Functional Ear Trainer has 3.7K ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two.
Functional Ear Trainer ships an update every 7 months, Absolute Pitch Trainer every 4 days. The most recent releases landed on October 19, 2026 and October 11, 2026 respectively.
