Have you (or maybe one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear? It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others. Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it? Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning. One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones. The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale. And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter: - who you are - an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician; - how old you are - a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult; - what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one). The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day. I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed a mobile app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

Atril is your band's songbook: your songs with chords, your setlists, and everyone playing the same thing at the same time. YOUR SONGS, THE WAY YOU READ THEM • Lyrics and chords in one or two columns, at the size you need from the music stand. • Change the key with one tap. With a capo, Atril shows the chords that actually sound, so the whole band reads the same thing. • Import songs by pasting the text or straight from the chord site you already use. • Hide the chords when you only want the lyrics. • Save each song's tempo and play the click without leaving the lyrics. SETLISTS FOR EVERY REHEARSAL AND EVERY GIG • Build the setlist, drag to reorder it, give it a date. • Share it with a 6-character code: every musician joins from their own phone or tablet. • Everyone keeps their own key and capo without touching anyone else's. • Lock the running order once it's settled, and tell the group in the chat. • Timer with each song's length, to keep the set on time. LIVE, TOGETHER • Full-screen performance mode, with auto-scroll at the speed you choose and the screen always on. • Rehearsal mode: whoever leads moves to the next song and everyone's screen follows instantly. • One-tap messages ("Chorus again", "Go to the bridge") that appear in a corner without pulling you out of the lyrics. • Notes and highlights on any line, shared with the whole group. ALSO INSIDE • Metronome with tap tempo and 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures. It plays even with your iPhone on silent. • Repertoire stats: what you play most, your keys, and what you haven't played in a while. • YouTube and Spotify links on every song. • English and Spanish. • Built for the iPad on the stand and the iPhone in your pocket. SUBSCRIPTION Atril is free for 1 month, everything included, no card required. After that, the subscription is 3.99 EUR per month or 34.99 EUR per year. Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Functional Ear Trainer at 4.9 against Atril's 4.0. Functional Ear Trainer also leads on ratings volume (3.8K vs 1). Atril's advantage is update cadence (every 2 days vs every 7 months). On price, review sentiment, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Functional Ear Trainer sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Atril sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Functional Ear Trainer holds the better App Store score, 4.9 against 4.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Functional Ear Trainer has 3.8K ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 97% of Functional Ear Trainer's written reviews are positive against 100% of Atril's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Functional Ear Trainer ships an update every 7 months, Atril every 2 days. The most recent releases landed on November 3, 2026 and October 31, 2026 respectively.
