Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Subsurface at none against Currents's 3. Subsurface also leads on rating (4.5 vs 4.2) and ratings volume (48 vs 5). Currents's advantage is update cadence (every 5 days vs every 2 months) and review sentiment (75% vs 63%). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Currents sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per month. Subsurface asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Subsurface holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Subsurface has 48 ratings behind it against 5, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 63% of Subsurface's written reviews are positive against 75% of Currents's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Subsurface ships an update every 2 months, Currents every 5 days. The most recent releases landed on September 27, 2026 and September 23, 2026 respectively.
