This is a phonics based game for older children who struggle with reading and may have dyslexia. This game will give the child practice in identifying the following sounds: 'oy', 'oi', 'ou', 'ow' (as /ou/), 'igh' (as long 'i'), 'oo', and 'ay'. The child will identify the sounds in the words that are called out. To do this, the astronaut will collect the sounds along with the robot pieces, so that he can build a robot and return to earth. This game is targeted for those who struggle to read or may have dyslexia. It corresponds to the reading program, Blast Off to Reading! However, it is not necessary to be using that particular program. This game contains no advertisements, push notifications or in-game purchases.

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is price: Bookshare Reader at Free against Phonics Blaster's $2.99. Bookshare Reader also leads on update cadence (every 3 weeks vs every 5 months) and ratings volume (67 vs 3). Phonics Blaster's advantage is rating (3.7 vs 3.3) and iOS requirement (10.0 vs 16.4). On review sentiment, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Phonics Blaster holds the better App Store score, 3.7 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Bookshare Reader has 67 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of Phonics Blaster's written reviews are positive against 36% of Bookshare Reader's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Phonics Blaster ships an update every 5 months, Bookshare Reader every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on September 27, 2026 and October 1, 2026 respectively.
