With the “FDA Age Calculator,” retailers can use their personal smartphones to help determine if the purchaser is old enough under federal law to buy tobacco products. Using the camera feature on a smartphone, the app is able to scan the driver’s license of the purchaser to determine if the customer is at least 21 years of age (the federal minimum age to buy a tobacco product). The birthdate listed on the photo id can also be manually entered into the app by the retailer for a quick age calculation. This application is only intended to assist retailers in calculating the age of the purchaser. This application does not check or verify whether an ID is real or authentic. Retailers are responsible for ensuring that they do not sell tobacco products to individuals under 21 years of age. This application does not transmit or share this information or save the information on the user’s device or a third party or government server.

TruAge is your secure digital ID for making age-restricted purchases. Currently accepted at limited retail locations. As new locations are added in early 2024, check for updates to see where TruAge is accepted: https://www.mytruage.org/ Let’s face it—the old-school method of getting carded has its challenges. Searching your wallet or purse for your ID is a pain, especially when you’re in a hurry and your phone is easily within reach. Plus, you shouldn’t have to put your privacy at risk. The TruAge app gives you a faster, safer way to prove your age at checkout, while keeping your personal information secure. Here’s how it works: Quickly scan and go — After a cashier scans your unique QR code in the app, TruAge confirms you’re good to go. They don’t need to manually review your driver’s license or enter your DOB. Protect your data — TruAge only looks at the four data points that verify your legal age, unlike other ID scanning systems that can expose up to 33+ pieces of personally identifiable information (PII), including your full name, address, height, weight, and height. Keep it private — TruAge never stores or shares personal details. An encrypted ID token ensures that purchases can’t be tracked or tied to your name.
